After months of rumors and rumblings, Toyota has released photos of its small sports car collaboration with Subaru, the Toyota FT-86 Concept. What follows is a very exciting concept from the world's most boring car company. http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13746_7-10368778-48.html Nice big pictures here: http://www.automotiveaddicts.com/7413/toyo...okyo-motor-show More coverage: http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/uptospeed/...-auto-show.html http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/articl...sRUYHAD9B5HNMG0 http://blogs.cars.com/kickingtires/2009/10...ar-concept.html A few quick facts: Price around 3 million yen (~$38,000) ~160-200-250hp from a Subaru boxer 2.0L 6 speed manual gearbox 2+2 seating Length 4,160 mm Width 1,760 mm Height 1,260 mm Wheelbase 2,570 mm Weight ???????! So its slightly shorter than the original AE86, with wheels more at the extremes, slightly wider but lower. All pointing towards a chassis designed for spirited driving so far. My initial impressions are R35 GTR -> tracing paper -> photocopy 75% reduction -> FT-86. I also think it looks fairly heavy but so do most concept cars. I suspect the power output will be more likely to be on the low side of 200hp unless they release a turbocharged version where you could very likely see well over 200hp. I also suspect the price is going to make many potential buyers tentative. Once you add in shipping, taxes etc etc you're on the high side of $40,000. Thats Mazda MX-5 region, a car thats had more than 20 years worth of refinement and market success with very similar numbers. I also don't expect they'll see much of the younger market with a price point like that. You can have far more fun in something like a second hand S15 Silvia, Supra, WRX, Evo etc for half the price. I think it will find a market eventually but it may be a little slow on the take up. More news as it comes to hand. -------------------- Take back the web [GetFirefox]

Wonder how different the boxer is to a current WRX motor, or if its just the same? IE, all the WRX turbo bits on one of these!!
Probably won't be seeing it for another 5+ (after actual release of car) years anyway when waranties start running out. .....unless somebody like Beau Yates decides to upgrade!! -------------------- I am just a worthless liar, I am just an imbecile. I've said (and so has everyone else) from day one that the subie motor will fail in the hands of the type of people who will buy this car.
Why oh why did they not just use an existing inline 4? Beams 3sge? Ah, thats right... Because they bought a sizeable chunk of Subaru, and need to get their money's worth out of the venture. This would also explain the reasoning behind using what is essentially a chopped up Liberty/Legacy platform with some pointy bodywork on top. There's still hope... At least as soon as the tuning houses get their dexterous little hands on them, remove that woeful Subaru lump of shit and replace it with a more appropriate driveline... But at 40k a shot, that will take some time. What the hell happened to sub 25k pricing? And where's the WEIGHT... How hefty is this bastard child going to be... Anything north of 1200 and it will definitely require boost or more cubes to keep up with the competition. And it had better be boost... Because large capacity boxer engines are woefully unresponsive. I'm still not happy. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7oOXdKcdpZ8...player_embedded This post has been edited by 7shades: Oct 7 2009, 01:24 PM -------------------- The major difference between a thing that might go wrong and a thing that cannot possibly go wrong is that when a thing that cannot possibly go wrong goes wrong it usually turns out to be impossible to get at or repair. - Douglas Adams

My intial thought is they have to do a good job becuase of the history of the car.
Would be interested what BBC top gear will say i can't imagine Clarkson or the other two boffins would know much about the original AE86. matthew -------------------- 'I have the simplest tastes. I am always satisfied with the best'

Some more news that might please:
The FT-86 is Toyota's concept for a sporty coupe being undertaken with Fuji Heavy Industries Inc., the company that manufactures Subaru vehicles. While it is fitted with a 2.0-liter boxer engine from Subaru, the overall design was created by Toyota's ED2 styling studio in France. Even the blue-red metallic paint was specially developed by Toyota. “Sports cars have to be red, but we wanted a new red,” said chief engineer Tetsuya Tada. “So we came up with shoujyouhi red, the traditional red color of a Japanese monkey's” backside. Toyota and Fuji Heavy plan to start producing a sporty car in late 2011. Toyota will be responsible for most of the engineering. Fuji Heavy will supply the horizontally opposed engine and manufacture the car at a Subaru plant. Fuji Heavy won't comment on whether the FT-86 Concept is that car or not; Subaru won't be displaying a sports car at the Oct. 24-Nov. 4 Tokyo show. But the car clearly underscores new President Akio Toyoda's push for more muscular, fun-to-drive models. Tada said Toyota wants the FT-86's sticker price to be in the $20,000 range. “It won't sell if it's over 3 million yen ($30,000),” he said. “The price has to appeal to regular customers.” http://www.autonews.com/article/20091006/A.../1171/FRONTPAGE -------------------- Take back the web [GetFirefox]

I like the look of it, aside from the front bumper.
Its more like a z than anything else at first glance. If its 6 speed we can prey that its an Aisin J160 like from most small to medium japanese performance cars of this period. Then the boxer into fr conversion would be an even more enticing idea, once they start to come up used. I mean it takes about 10 years from release roughly for the cars to be affordable in parts. Late 90s lexus IS200s (Beams engines and 6 speed transmission!) weren't cheap in Japan to buy new, or anywhere, but you can now pick the driveline up for around 4 grand. Lets hope the Japanese market goes bananas for them. If they have a couple hundered thousand of them in existence, in ten years time we will be able to enjoy them. I don't think theres a snowflakes chance of it weighing less than 1200kgs. I hope it does. It will need to be a shade lighter than its competitors to keep up. There may be a Holy grail episode of Top Gear coming up where they do the new vs old thing. Hopefully they pull out a mint 1986 Panda hatch with a few decent mods to lift it to the same hp as the new car, and drive them both like a shootout. I want to see the stigs lap in a nice 86, and in the new 86! |
