  1. yeah that was me at tassie nats. just took it in for a laugh and to turn a few heads (which i successfully did) only did 17 flat on 6psi, was running 10psi for the burnout comp and go to whoa. head and bottom end are dead stock, its a blow through system. have a look in the 4k-c turbo thread in the engine conversions as i've got heaps of details and pics in there. not sure on power. at a guess i'd say 1 and 1/2 times more power, but twice as much torque!!!
  2. thats why my turbo is actually to small. sitting on 100kmh with just the tiniest pit of throttle is basically on boost!! :D darren was running HKS 25/30 IIRC! :) what is the availability of the 5k electronic dizzy like in NZ?? rough price?? think the 4k points dizzys pull about 40o max mechanical advance.
  3. this thread is gunna be chock full of 4ktc info by the time we're finished!! thats what i say- share the k series love! :D wouldn't mind trying to find one of those cheap! :D as i've just got a 3k points one at the mo. what have you done as far as advancement and timing though? has it been regraphed or something. mines got locked out mechanical (with a couple of cable ties hehe) advancement and no vac advance either. its set at about 20o befor at idle. been thinking about putting half the mech advance back in. with full mechanical advance it contantly blew head gaskets. :)
  4. thats right your on holidays.... .......is that why there was a huge party at your place last night!! :) haha j/k.
  5. ah that reminds me, the nikkis on older mazdas like 626 1.5 and 2 litres have the same bolt pattern on th manifold. ie carbies go straight on, but you just need to grind down one of the bolt castings to clear the accelerator linkage. your probably getting sick of me asking you questions boost+k, but what did you do with your ignition?? and also what exactly is your turbo, mine too small really and need an upgrade soon??
  6. sorry to dig up an old thread but i've got a few q's. firstly how much were those valve springs? and were did you get them from? same for the head gasket? that looks like a copper head gasket though. I though you couldn't use them in any engine that has cast block / alloy head as the metals have different expansion rates?? :)
  7. just realised your in hobart!! if your ever coming up to launy or something, pre-arrange with me to come have a look at my car, and i'll take you for a spin and give you (and your dad) a run down on 4k-tc's! :)
  8. cost really depends on how much you can do yourself, I did EVERYTHING on my car, so only parts cost me. (I would have put atleast 50 hours work into it!) your dad ins deffanitely right, but weres the fun in taking the easy path!! :) my stock 4k has 6psi gate pressure and 10psi on a switch, apparently if you start running over 12psi then you'll start cracking pistons. k series engines are tuff as shite. I had a few initial teething problems, which you would have with the twins anyway, but it is reliable now its all sorted. forget the 3k head, what this will do is raise your compression when you want to lower it for the turbo. (this can be done by retarding the timing.) blow throughs aren't that hard to set up, just a few little sweeks to be made. Darren (untubbed_20) was telling me one of his mates has a 5k with a wrx td04 and top mount, still running a standard corolla carby that makes 90rwkw (f@$ken awesome for a standard 5k) on 12psi i think. www.gotboost.org (i think) is were a lot of ET/EXA guys reside, i'm sure there would be a turbo or 2 for sale on there....actually i'm going to look for an upgrade now! :D know what you mean boost+k, I did the whole convo for about $500, thats why i don't wanna blow half that again on just a reg!! :D don't tell me your a rotor head aswell! :D
  9. do you mean how i'v done, or am going to do the fuel system?? currently doesn't fuel up, the needle and seat retention on those little webers in unbelievable, holds 12+psi easy. the malpassi you say you are using, is it a rising rate reg, ie does it rase fuel pressure when on boost. easiest way to tell is if it is, it wil have a vacuum line attached to it. the only thing thats been stopping me changing to the efi setup is finding a reg that fits the corolla budget!! :) cheapest i've found new is $260. so basically what i'm asking is: the malpassi that you are using, is it just a run of the mill EFI rising rate reg that you have been able to reg down to a suitable pressure for the carby at idle???? cause if it is i can find one of these cheap as off any car forum!! if you could just give me a part number i should be able to work out the rest! if you don't mind spending a bit of money on your car, maybe look into upgrading to a hilux diff! they would be hard to modify for the rolla and I'll garentee you'll never break those axles. the later hilux diffs also came with lsd's which can be fitted to the older carriers. hilux diffs are the most common upgrade for old skool rotas (which I also have), and can be found in like 400hp plus 13b turbs!!
  10. I really need a bigger radiator and 5 speed for highway cruise etc but would be keen for a meet up. might actually be a good time for it this week as not many people will be working. its just the one that may be going away for the weekend that wouldn't be able to make it.
  11. gimme your car, around $1000 and a couple of weeks! :P
  12. we should went up the outlet:jamie:, but there was a camera up there, knew that cause the guy who was in the car with me was having a bit of a race up there and got done at about 160kmh. thats why we brought the rolls into town. have a bit of a squirt next to a vn on saturday night, think i gave him a bit of a shock when i stuck next to all the way through third and he didin't pull away. well he did just to start with, so i flicked the switch! :P
  13. there 175/65/13, but there on sigma wheels so the offset is well into the wheel arches, thats why they look pretty skinny. I was happy. :P
  14. felt the need for some burnouts on saturday night (private property ofcourse! :) ) was sitting there charring them in second about to swing her around......though yeah why not, flicked the switch to 10psi and snatched third!!!!! AND IT HELD IT :P I'm so proud of my little 4k!! :P
  15. are you using a rising rate reg and efi pump? (read one of my previous posts) any idea on what sort of power figure its making??
  16. :lolcry: specs??? Is that an SU hiding in there? :lolcry: or maybe a fuel pressure reg. i really can't tell from that angle, or does it have some sort of EFI?? also is your exhaust manifold sorta like extracters that collect just befor the turbo? and while were on exhausts, is that lttle pipe a screamer or does it plumb back in? :lolcry: shits and giggles are great hay! :P "......what the fugs in that" "......oh just the standard 4k!" :)
  17. this is a pm i just sent to somebody, though i might aswell cut and paste it here to so the next time i get asked about my setup the typing is already done! :) here a couple of early shot befor it was running. notice the absence of chaff from running it with no exhaust whats so ever. :lolcry: shows the carby in the bottom part of the box. http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b396/taz...uff/Picture.jpg http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b396/taz...tuff/rolla1.jpg http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b396/taz...tuff/rolla2.jpg these are a few weeks after it was running after i finally got some exhaust on it. theres the chaff!! :P my massive turbo!! haha, atleast its made by toyota! http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b396/taz.../Picture015.jpg the j-pipe on a ke70 manifold. ke35-55 etc have a 4-2-1 exhaust manifold (headers) and the ke70 ones are 4-1. had a little water leak till it cooked itself shut. :lolcry: http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b396/taz.../Picture017.jpg all 2 foot of exhaust. just got the rest put on on monday. http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b396/taz.../Picture016.jpg water lines and bov. http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b396/taz.../Picture018.jpg oil send. $10 worth of fittings from enzed!! http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b396/taz.../Picture019.jpg my busted bov. hose blew off, bov hit the engine fan, busted holes in the that and broke 2/3 of the fan blades off!! http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b396/taz.../Picture020.jpg this end of the j-pipe is supported to take some whieght, but with a flex rubber mount as it still needs to move with the engine. http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b396/taz.../Picture022.jpg the pic you would have already seen. http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b396/taz.../Picture021.jpg so just a quick run down on what was required, and some rough prices. turbo - free (a mate has a 1ggtte celica who has blown 2 engine already, so he has 6 turbo, i'm already on my second. :P turbo plumbing (exhaust manifold) - ke70 exhaust manifold $30 from a wrecker. but you already have one. ;) took a dummy j-pipe mad out of toilet rolls and lecky tape to midas. they bend it up for me but thought it wasn't right, so i got it for free, but it did the job. flanges for the j-pipe were cut off an on ke70 exhaust and i spent and hour cutting one out of the 1g manifold with an angle grinder!! :abuse: so they were free. the 2 foot of exhaust cost me $80 cutom made. again at midas. water lines were taken from the standard 1g setup. free again. oil lines as mentioned above, were $10 from enzed for the send fittings. with the return, (this is really dodgy) I drilled a hole in the sump, used the standard 1g oil return fitting that bolts onto the block and welded it over the hole in the sump. did this still in the car, so there was oil fires and all shit while welding!! :hmm: get this as high on the sump as you can. the 1g had bolt on oil fittings with steel lines, so all i did on the turbo end was bolt the fitting back on cut the metal linesn and slip and clap hoses over them, keep your send oil line down in size to keep the pressure up!! the drum that the carby is in is actually the box that hold the air filter inside it on a hilux, was $25 from a wrecker. keepn it in the toyota family again! :jamie: ! this was perfect for what i needed, as the top (now bottom) was shallow enough for me to still be able to bolt the carby down, but high enough to run the fuel lines and excelerator cable through the side. btw, it took a bit of modifying and r&d to get this right, the standard clips that hold the filter in won't hold 1 boost, so it is sealed with threaded rods that run through the box (top to bottom) to squash it together. just got wing nuts on top. oh, obviously battery was relocated to the boot to made room for the turbo, i also ran all the wiring on this side of the car down through the guard. the hoses in the pics were only temperary, bottom ones an old radiator hole, standard mx6 bov, and the one with the flex rings was off the hilux. (which was useless and kept splitting. cost free, free and free. standard dizzy was locked, with cable ties!! :lolcry: with no vacuum or mech advance set on about 20 degrees befor at idle. I did put an unlocked dizzy in it a one stage, and it blew headgaskets like there was no tomorrow. don't worry if you do, if you know how to fix them (hardest bit is doing the tappets) it costs $67 to fix a k series head gasket - $44 for head machining, and $23 for the gasket (can you tell i've fixed a couple!. :lolcry: ) oh fuel system - this is the bit that took the most r&d to get right as i did everything the hard way and found out for myself. the original setup consited of my old carter green pump second had from my mazda (these are suppose to do 72gph @ 4-6psi, IIRC) and a run of the mill adjustable fuel pressure reg (1-6psi) for $30, regged to about 5psi. what happened with this is it would boost fine, and if you held it on boost for about 10 seconds it would just die in the arse. basically what was happening was the 6+psi that the turbo made was greater than the fuel pressure being made by the pump. this caused the fuel to be pushed back along the fuel lines backwards through the pump and back into the tank. the 10 worth of fuel that I had was only what was left in the fuel bowl. I fixed this problem by getting a carter black (100gph @ 12-14psi){i'm a fan of carter pumps, rather than say holleys, as they are self priming and you don't have to put them below tank level.} and f@$king off the reg (small weber needle and seat will hold this) so that I had 12psi of fuel pressure vs my 6psi of boost pressure. this setup works, but is not ideal, as the pump still get pressure pushing back on it and will no-doubt f@$k the pump. after about 6 months mine is starting to fluxuate a bit. I am now running a boost controller switch at 10psi of boost, but can't go any higher as i will then have the same boost pressure vs fuel pressure issues again. this leads me to the new fuel system i am about to put in that i mention in the post. I'll use a s14 in tank pump (located in the corolla tank so i don't have to use a surge tank.) with an adjustable rising rate fuel pressure reg DESIGHNED FOR CARBY TURBO cars. I will set base pressure to about 5-6psi at idle (but can go higher as i know the needle and seat will hold it) and then have a 1:1 boost reference from there so compat the boost pressure. so for example if I was to run 25psi, fuel pressure will jump from 5 to 30psi. so theres just a quick run down! :lolcry: if anyone has any q's, fire away!
  18. haha yeah an 040 deffinately would be an overkill, but you could use it. would just be a heaps more volume and pressure for the reg to regulate. short and narrow of my above post: for a blowthrough carby turbo you always need more fuel pressure than boost pressure. :P
  19. bupbow, I'm gunna pull you up on that one. blowthrough or drawthrough both actually need quite a bit of fuel pressure. blowthrough espeacially. at the moment I am running about 12 psi straight into my needle and seat. the pump is a carter black which makes 12-14psi. at the moment i am restricted to about 10psi of boost, because if i go over that (or my fuel pressure drop for some reason) then I run out of fuel!!! this is cause by there being more boost pressure than fuel pressure to the fuel actually gets puch back along the fuel lines to the pump. I'm actually just about to change my fuel setup. Its taken me a while to find a suitable fuel reg within my corolla budget. what I have been looking for is a rising rate, adjustable reg suitable for carby turbo cars. these regs will let you set base pressure from 3-15psi at idle and then 1:1 boost reference above that on boost. I couldn't use a normal EFI malpassi etc as you cannot get the base pressure down far enough for the needle and seat to hold it. I'm just going to use an s14 in tank pump out of a mates car. this way I can run say 20psi if i wanted as the fuel pressure would jump to say 25psi, with a base pressure of 5psi. sorry bassy, carby is a 32/32 dtmr-a off a fiat 128 sport L. has a massive needle and seat (for this weber) out of a 4 litre falcon weber, secondary jet in the primary, redrilled secondary jet. thats about all the mods to the carby. oh yeah its got no choke flat either. The whole idea about putting the carby in that box though way to have equal pressure on both side of it so that really made boost modifying it not neccessary. current pump is a carter black, 100gph @ 12-14psi with NO-REG! in a couple of weeks the fuel system will consist of: s14 in tank pump. aeromotive AER-13204 carby turbo rising rate reg. 3-15psi base pressure. 1:1 boost referencing. this reg will require me to setup up a return line to the tank.
  20. mid last year when kym sheppard got killed in that accident, i was on the road 5 minutes behind them. got diverted up through there and i was pretty much the first car through, had a blast in the work van, back was dead empty too so it was handling pretty well too (for a VAN). :P was actually going to organise an ausrotary.com cruise up through there. when it happens might have to put a link on here and let you guys tag along and get your arses handed to you buy some rotors!! :D :|
  21. JUST got back from putting that exhaust on. fug its quiet now. has absolutely no note, which is cool, because its got no whistle now either. so i'm no longer cop bait!! :P and its sooo much happier sitting at constent rpm now, like cruising the highway. still getting pretty hot though (espeacially on 10spi :| ) so i think i might do a water pump swap tonight. :D I'll get back to you about the discs, if you sell them in the mean time thats cool, i've just been neglecting my mazda a bit lately so i better spend some money on that for a change!
  22. heres a couple of pics of the f-truck.
  23. haha, yeah I think i heard that! :) you would have been standing under the tower in the corner there. yeah I had a few mates standing around there so no doubt it was one of them thinking ...."huh, someone actually likes his rolla haha" oh well, atleast i did a better "burnout" than the r33 with the space savers! :lolcry: (well i think!)
