Just like Dr Dog (that’s a dad joke for those who read to their kids) I’m in Madrid at a bone marrow transplant conference. Or I would be. Instead I’m doing it remotely over a live stream in chilly Melbs till 2am each night. Fascinating the ways covid has affected people around the world in just this one small area of medicine.

Australia is well placed, but we really need to keep our borders closed till effective vaccination is available.  And I mean closed closed.  Please don’t see that as some sort of racist perspective because it isn’t.

Interesting to see Frydenberg ranting on the news about the current grade 4 restrictions in greater Melb. Not sure what he expects Dan to do, but at least on this occasion Dan has got it right.  He just has to hold his nerve.  I know the advice he is getting is to hold, remains to be seen if he does   as he didn’t follow the advice last time.  Financially of course it’s a disaster on many levels

Out of curiosity, what do you for a living?

  2. I'll start off this post with this boring and dirty picture of the Corolla.
It's been a very long time since the bonnet has been on, so a pretty good moment tonight.

I got the engine back from the engine builder and got pretty excited to so slapped it back in the car and test fit all of my sweet new gear.

Turns out that he missed putting a oil drain in the bigport head to match to the smallport 7 rib block that I'm using. These heads are pretty notorious for storing way too much oil and starving the block of oil. So everything had to be undone and pulled back out for this drain.

Once back in I started plumbing everything. I'm getting rid of the cold start gear for use of the old right foot for a few minutes instead - so I can neaten this mess up. For example of out with the old and in with the new:

This picture was the first time it got pushed out of the driveway for a few months

The new vacuum manifold block will be here this week as I broke the last one, lol. So will be able to get that sorted and then fit my intake and fuel rail again! Soon!

  3. Good write up

I'm a fan of the blue - it really fucks me off that manufacturers are not putting a $50 part in a car to push people to a $9000 increase and then don't offer major options like manual on the high spec cars.
Then again, I'm get pretty excited every time I pop the petrol flap open in the AE71 and don't have to pull the key out of the ignition like a pleb.

hey now thats a good idea.

The thing that always goes first on socket sets is that annoying plastic insert inside the case. Maybe ill do what you did to my sidchrome set.

Yeah, super happy with it. That's another reason I did mine - the plastic inserts seem to go brittle after a few years of use. Also means no more imperial sockets clogging up space!

I’d thought about doing similar with mine as everything rolls everywhere when you move the drawer. Where did you find the foam? My local bunnings etc don’t have it that I can see

I got it from Clarke Rubber - they're fucking absurdly priced. I'd recommend buying online or through another mob.

  5. Got bloody sick to death of my tools being unorganised all the time.

Shout out to Sidchrome for making all of their plastic moulds incompatible with their toolboxes!

Feels good to have all me sockets in one spot.

  6. All booked in with the engine builder for June. Went with a guy that seems to love corollas and has built some pretty cool 4ages in the past. Aiming to have the sucker around Sandown in August.

Been doing all the little things while I've had the car gutted. Everything is so clean, I think I've gone through about 2 boxes of degreaser cleaning everything up. I wish I had a little more room for a parts washer!

Picked up my Haltech a couple of weeks ago and my camshafts and shim kit arrived from TODA about a month ago. Other than that I've just been going through and organising the little bits and pieces so I can finish everything off when I get the engine back.

Found a pretty big crack in my headers when I was cleaning them up for paint, it's in a bit of a prick of a spot but the future father in-law is a engineering wizard so he should be right to fix em if I stay in his good books for long enough.

I'm trying to source a 20v BT flywheel as I'll be needing a new clutch kit regardless and I was using the stock bigport 200mm flywheel. I nearly pulled the trigger on a TODA flywheel as well - if I can't find a blacktop flywheel I might just bite the bullet. Figured I'll upgrade it now while it's easy.

Finding anything on this was an absolute prick with a whole lot of misinformation so if for whatever reason someone has popped on to a forum instead of Facebook:

    4AGE 16v bigport flywheel upgrade

The stock 4AGE has a 200mm flywheel but the 200 and 212mm flywheels are completely interchangeable. The 225mm (4AGZE etc) flywheels will not fit.

The lightest of the flywheels is the 20v blacktop flywheel (212mm) and is a bolt on upgrade - obviously just needs a suitable 212mm clutch kit to be operable. This is a decent upgrade that is far cheaper than an aftermarket kit if you can find one. Having a larger clutch disc is also an added bonus.

  7. Appreciate it Stu - it's tough when I don't even know when I'm going to make it to the shed! If I need a hand I'll definitely let you know though - legend!
I've got wiring left to do so that's a bit daunting.

Do you get out to any events etc? If not we should grab a beer or something! Yet to really get amongst the Corolla community since moving to Melbourne aside from picking up parts here and there.

  8. The car has the exact same floor plan as a regular E7 so you will have no issue transferring standard stuff. It's really just the door cards and some dash bits that will be a pain if they're a bit stuffed.

I hope you're committed to it, would like to see a Panno thread.

  9. Booking the head in for reconditioning this week - cams, valves, springs and computer to be ordered this week.

I have absolutely no direction with the block though, will try to work that out this week too.

I'll leave you with a bit of a teaser test-fit before I stripped the motor down.

I have these grand plans to put a 4age in my KE70.  So far i have an old used and abused AE82 4age (which i believe is a 16v big port?), a RWD manifold and a tail shaft haha,  I am debating on whether or not to send my manual pedal box to KE conversions over east to get it converted to a HYD clutch set up or just keep searching for an AE71 pedal box.

I am planning on rebuilding/refreshing the 4age prior to installation but from all the people I've spoken to that had had NA 4ages they all seem to have been disappointed with the outcome and have told me to just to go turbo.  How did you find the NA 4gae? and what are your plans with the 16v?

If it's your first one, just do yourself a favour and do everything as simple as possible. Baby steps kind of thing. I'd definitely hunt down an AE71 pedal box as I hate using modified stuff when there is an OEM option.

My NA 4AGE took 3 years of complete unparalleled unsympathetic lead-footed limiter bashing abuse and still got me to and from work everyday.

Turbo is great for power but I've become quite fond of NA responsiveness and reliability.

I'll be sticking NA and I'll update the plans in the next post (Y).

Well Ben, i'll finish the vented disc experiment and you can do the Bill Sherwood dry-sump-with-stock-oil-pump one..  Solves all sweeping corner problems!

Very peculiar way of doing it! Personally I'll always prefer the bolt on 86 option, lol. If I hadn't blown my budget out already, I would have taken you up on that!

  11. Blacktop was incredibly hard to source even with cash burning a hole in my pocket.

I'm just going to make the 16v cool.

Just starting to get the reasoning why people tend not to rebuild these motors. I'm throwing money away like a bricky at the pokies and I have even touched cams and computer.

    Soon!

  12. I suppose I should update: Unfortunately when the head came off it didn't seem to be too nice and there was scoring throughout the block.
Considering rebuilding the thing but did the budget and I'd prefer to head in a different direction.

I'm currently trying to source a Blacktop 20v - if anyone knows of a decent example lying around - I have cash waiting.

I figured now it's ʞ©$ɟed and sitting around in the garage, I'll do it right the first time and put something cool in.
