That starting and then snuffing out sounds like it might be the ballast resistor has open circuited. Short out the terminals with a wire bridge and give it a try. You can run the engine without the ballast resistor in circuit but it will eventually toast the points.

Hey Gurus So the Princess' rolla has been making a noise that sounds like a noisy fan belt. Turns out the noise is coming from the tappet area. So i looked up the "how to" section (good explanation Taz btw). I just want o make sure I have it right the compression stroke is when the rocker gear is floppy for want of a better word. Thats when you set the values. I can't believe I can't remember how to do this. I must have done it a couple of hundred times when I worked in the import shop...

I paid $85 for a Fuel Miser rebuild kit last year.

Pull the plugs out squirt some oil down the hole and turn it over quite a few times by hand to get the bores well lubricated. Put the plugs back in and give it a spin with the starter motor. If she has sat for ten years the chances of the bore being marked by the rings sitting in the same place would be pretty high.

There is a guy on gumtree selling a complete running engine for $210. The suburb is Eagleby which is halfway between Brissy and the GC.

So further into this issue is the soot build up in the exhaust pipe a symptom of running too rich coz while she runs well I wonder if the carby is set up perfectly or do we have to say good enough is good enough considering the age of these beauties.

Have you proved the lamps are functional. They could have all popped at once. We sometimes overlook the simple things and go straight to something complicated and finally end up where we should have started. We can be victims of our knowledge.

She does reverse it in for a fast exit when she starts early I'm hoping sugar soap will get it off the back wall of the garage. I was hoping it would be something like you have described and not some annoying carby issue. Thanks for your help.

So here is the issue I started the Princess' rolla early on Saturday morning let it warm up and usual down she came jumped in and off to work she sped. After the car was out of the garage I noticed a nasty splattery stain on the floor and on the inside of the roller door and on the back wall of the garage from when she reverses in for a quick getaway. It doesn't seem to be oil but more like a moisture and soot mixture. I checked the water and oil levels on her return and all seemed in order. So any ideas of what this may be and how to remedy it would be greatly appreciated.

So what you are saying is that it's not a straight forward swap. So realistically I should be trying to locate a GTI or SX unit to make life easier.

Mine was a TA22 Celica. It had a Peter Williamson ex race engine with a yamaha head that I scored by chance. I ran 40mm side draft webbers and I decked it out like a GT clone coz my old man worked with a guy whose father was the Australian spare parts manager for Toyota at the time. The stuff I got and the prices I paid were amazing. In the 80s you could go to Surfers Paradise raceway on open days and do laps and do quarters and get them timed and run through a speed trap. I have a certificate with my top speed of 128mph somewhere. I loved that car and those days of my misspent youth.

That is super granny spec in the engine bay area all the vac lines and filters are all place still. Do you have a mod plate for that silver foil. Take a pic of the ID plates on the fire wall and as Banjo said do you know her history.

If you want that granny spec look definitely go the originals. they are rare as they were an optional extra in the day. I got one for my daughters hardtop and it looks great. Make sure it comes with the rubber gasket that goes between the mirror and the door panel.

I insured the Princess' KE55 hardtop with shannons for $6500 and she gets the car back in the event of a write off. She is on the policy as a first year driver and the premium is $48 dollars a month. They didnt bat an eye about the insured value. Hopefully we wont have to test out how good they really are...

And...the xx KE55 came with colour coded bumpers that are the extended type.

Thats how you could tell the difference between a 30 and a 55 at a glance in the days when rollas roamed the streets in herds.

Neat ride she looks granny spec. That looks like the factory pinstripe. SCA sell an assortment of pinstripes in different widths and colours I would advise not pulling the old stuff off as it may take the paint with it. The paint underneath will more than likely be less faded as well. Probably a job for professionals if you have to. Over the counter seat covers fit there are plenty at the auto shops and on line.

As far as I know the bumpers are the original ones as I bought it from the second owner. Maybe that was some of the cosmetic differences between the CS and the SE models as Hiro noted.

The Princess' KE55 hardtop is a 1980 model with square headlights and full chrome bumpers. It is a CS. There are mounting holes in the front guards and rear quarter panels that accommodate the mounting brackets for the extended chrome section. I have seen some late 55s with early bumpers on and the holes with bungs in them. looks ordinary.

That is good news it increases my probability of getting an AC system and appease the Princess.
