I believe the solenoids are different between 1ZZ and 2ZZ (part numbers are definitely different, but not by much), although some places out there on the internet do call up the same solenoid for both (note that 2ZZs have 2 solenoids, one VVL and one VVT, whilst the 1ZZ only has the VVT one).

Have you checked the lift bolts first?  They're the first port of call on a 2ZZ whenever lift doesn't seem to be functioning properly (although not quite sure what you mean by "sounds bad"), and are a cheap and sometimes easy fix.  Also worthwhile looking at is the filter screens on the solenoids themselves, the solenoids could be fine but the filters clogged.

Alright, so i have replaced the lift bolts, they were looking pretty rough, but still all there. Ive tested the solenoids, and both are functional (at least when i put 12v through them). And the filter screens are also clean. I made a friend that used to work at Toyota who has some equipment to manually turn on the solenoids so we can test them.

A further question i have is, could there be any other cause for the noise, which i can only really describe as "screeching" from 4500rmp onwards?

Thanks mate, I'll have a look into it

  3. Sup Gang,

Recently I bought a 2004 Sportivo, and it is in really good shape, aside from the VVTL-I, when i get high in the revs it starts sounding bad. I figured it was a bad solenoid, but I'm having a hard time finding the VVT solenoids for the 2zz, was just wondering if anyone knows if the VVT solenoids are the same on the 1zz?

    Thanks,

    Hi Lewis,

I've not come across this before, so can't offer much help.

However, if you Google your query, Google offers the following . . . .

    Hope that helps.

    Cheers Banjo

Appreciate the help mate. At least i know where i should be looking now.

    Thank you

    Hi Lewis,

Build up of carbon in an IAC valve will stop it working properly. Even a small bit of carbon, will stop it.

Have a look at this video, & see if your valve is like this one.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VOUB1UiDkKc

If your IAC has severe carbon build up, you may have to replace the whole IAC valve assembly. You would be surprised how a little bit of hard carbon, inside the IAC, on the vanes, can prevent them from working properly.

There is also the possibility that the actuator is faulty.

I still wouldn't write off, the possibility of a leaking gasket somewhere of the inlet manifold, between the throttle body & the head, if the IAC works well.

Let us know how you go.

    Cheers Banjo

Have to get round to checking it out when it is not so bloody hot outside.

Also just asking if there is a possibility of a faulty MAP sensor or something?

    Cheers

  6. Sorry it took me so long reply

It came on a while ago but got progressively worse.

I didnt do any work on the engine or anything like that.

It will start off at 1600 and when the car heats up it will drop to about 1200 briefly. But when i then drive it, it will stay at 1800.

I don't have an aftermarket ECU either.

    Thanks Banjo

    Hi Lewis,

If there is a factory original harness down behind the fog lights, that is not used, then that is probably for the fog lights.  If you have hooked it up, you will need to add a plug-in relay, for the fog-lights to work.  Toyota would not provide a relay, if there was no fog lights fitted.  However, the harness & relay/fuse box would be wired for fog lights, & all you should have to do, is add relay & fuse to the relay/fuse box.

    Should be a goer.

    Cheers Banjo

So after looking at other forums, it seems toyota did not provide a relay space. The best there is, is a 15amp fog light fuse. Looks like I'm going to be doing some wiring!

    Hi Lewis,

Is the headlight stalk, assembly, with fog light switch built in, identical to your currently fitted one, except the foglight switch function ?

Hey Banjo, yes its identical apart from the foglights function. Plugged it in and everything works apart from the foglights. Is there a relay that currently is not in my car that i need to source?

    Cheers

    Hi Lewis,

Plenty of stuff on the net, regarding fitting fog lights to Corollas.

You can also get the actual fog light switch on line, with plug & wire tails, that just plugs into your dash/facia, in place of the little blanking piece.

You might need the changeover relay also.

Hopefully, if you've found the wiring already exists, it is just a case of adding lights, switch, & relay.

    Hope that assists.

    Cheers Banjo

Hey, thanks for the info, just wondering if it would be a slightly different process for a headlight stalk with a fog light switch. I got one of those but don't know if just swapping it will allow it to work. Any ideas?

    Cheers

If any models of your year had foglights, then the wiring will be in the car. If it was only after the facelift then possibly not.  You might have to trawl the net through the most dodgy sites listing wiring diagrams that force you to sign up then supply the wrong wiring diagram at glacial speed, but a factory wiring diagram will tell you the colours and connectors involved. Try the other Toyota forums too.

If you hunt around behind the front bumper you might find un-used connectors that are for foglights. There is likely a switch blank plate in the dash that you poke out and install a switch for them.

If not, you start from scratch with a switch, a relay and some wires...

Had a look in there and there seems to be some wires! Hopefully all goes well then. Thank you!

  11. Hey guys, I'm look to add foglights to my pre facelift AE112. I'm wondering if the necessary wiring is tucked away in the car somewhere like with some electronic components or if i have to do my own wiring. If its the latter, how would I go about that?

    Cheers!

I don't think the shifter end of the cable is really "serviceable", you can get solid brass bushings for the gearbox end from Speedsource etc (or do the classic skateboard bearing hack) but if the shifter ends are really flogged out it might be a case of a new shifter cable (or shift arm if it's the ball on the shifter that is worn rather than the cup on the cable).  Normally the shifter end it is the cradle bushes that you replace to try and firm things up.

Is it an all-round "looseness" or limited to front/back or side-to-side (which might indicate a particular linkage bush)?

Thanks bro. Its the whole thing, not limited to any direction

  13. After spotting a corolla sportivo near my house,  i now really want to get a sportivo body kit for my pre-facelift rolla, but I'm under the impression from different forums that they cannot go on pre-facelift models. Can anyone confirm this / explain why?  And is there any way i could get one on my car (without using cable ties and duct tape)?

  14. I have a squeak that i can hear while i drive. I'm fairly confident that it isnt a belt squeak because it almost sounds as if it is coming from below the car. The only clue I can give is that there is no squeak in neutral. Only when the car is moving. But the squeak goes away when i put even the slightest amount of pressure on the clutch. Any guidance would be muchly appreciated. Cheers
