  1. Ok so here is my issue, Not long ago I bought a KE70, replaced the carburettor to twin su with lynx manifold, bought new headers etc. It ran once. Fast forward a week after that when my mate was around and I wanted to show off my mental 4into1 headers and how loud it was, wouldn't start though I might have been out of fuel, filled it up with some juice, still nothing. after a while of cranking it started, but was minimal (like, maybe 100) rpm, so low you could still crank it and it was ok with it. then it died. checked the distrubitor, rotor button was spinning freely, and points had weak spark, no problems. I'll switch it to an electronic distributor, get a bosch module, bosch GT40r coil, electronic dizzy, followed Jackbyo's mad guide to install a new electronic distributor (hence why I went with the coil and module I did) but still no spark, not from the coil, tested it with the old spark against the block or bolt head trick as well. made sure my wiring was all ok, still no spark. Re did the ground leads to the battery neg terminal and the engine earth, still no spark. Checked timing a million times ( the old rough TDC then rotor to spark lead one in the cap) ((dunno if that helps with anything)) I'm not great when it comes to car electronics, i've read that bad starters can draw too much power and kill spark so I'm thinking that might be my problem? Anyhow, this thing is killing me, the fact that it ran once, but not any more is driving me mental and ive scoured just about every lead I can think of. So now i'm coming to you lot for advice and hoping that you guys can point me in the right direction in regards to ideas or things ive missed that I should check Cheers in advance! ~Ethan
  2. Hi all newbie here I am driving my mothers AE82 Corolla and it has a rattle in around the distributor. It wont idle properly if at all and has flat spots all over the acceleration cycle. I thought I would consult the brains trust on this forum before I start spending money on the wrong parts. The rattle is not from the engine and sounds to me like the dizzi fly weights or a loose wing nut around the carby area. Its not a regular mechanical knock. See picks
  3. I'm getting into the wiki again and it's gotten a bit messier from when it was the old FAQ. I'd like to tidy it up and take the chance to include even more knowledge while I'm at it. We currently have three pages for distributors and ignition: http://www.rollaclub.com/wiki/index.php?title=Tech:Engine/K_Series/Distributor'>http://www.rollaclub.com/wiki/index.php?title=Tech:Engine/K_Series/Distributor - this is pictures and part numbers of internal and external ignitors http://www.rollaclub.com/wiki/index.php?title=Tech:Engine/K_Series/Electronic_distributor - this one i tidied, rewrote, and added to today http://www.rollaclub.com/wiki/index.php?title=Tech:Engine/K_Series/Distrib - this one is just denso part numbers I'll combine these into one page. If anyone has anything at all they'd like to add on the topic of dizzys/ignition/coils/spark, please note it down in this thread, I'm happy to organise it all into a nice wiki article. Some things I can already think to add: Talk about Denso and Bosch points distributors, list differences (Denso adjuster screw) and cap/rotor part numbers List coil wire lengths and plug types, I have this in a picture I saved off eBay Talk about how lower resistance of plug wires is the most important factor in wires, not shielding thickness Upgrading oil-type coils, from stock to Bosch GT40 to MSD Blaster II Talk about having distributors regraphed to suit different cams, give props to PEI in Nunawading, Vic List stock spark plug numbers and gap Talk about the need to run cooler plugs in a worked K motor or your tappets heat up and unwind clack clack clack :P Things I can think I'd like others advice on: Ballast resistors, wtf they even do, how they seem to be common problems, how to diagnose a faulty one Where did the elec dizzy with external ignitor come from? Late or import KE70? 5K vans? Other? Any experience on running fancy $200 spark plugs in K motors? Worth it or waste of money? If you'd like to talk to any of these points, or corrent me, or can think of stuff I've missed please do go for it!
  4. Hey guys, I've been looking around through a few threads and can't quite seem to find the answer I'm Looking for. What I want to do is convert my points ignition to an electronic one, however, in preparation for a future engine build I'm looking at doing it with MSD gear. What I'm looking at are these; http://www.msdignition.com/Products/Coils/Stock_Replacement/8203_-_Blaster_2_Coil_w/Ballast___Hardware.aspx http://www.msdignition.com/Products/Ignitions/Daily_Driver/6425_-_Digital_6AL_Ignition_Control.aspx http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/toyota-3k-4k-5k-corolla-electronic-distributor-ke10-ke20-ke30-ke55-ke70-ke38-k-/111272845830 The car has a Bosch Distributor and changing the points often is giving me the S@#$&, as the car starts to run rough. Looking through jackbyo's write up (http://www.rollaclub.com/board/topic/46089-how-to-install-an-electronic-distributor/) will the same instructions still apply with the gear I'm looking at? And Is there anything I'm overlooking? Excuse the noobness, I was working on EFI dunnydores before making the switch. Cheers in advance
  5. I have a smallport 4age and I am in the process of fitting it with twin 45 carbs and putting it in my ke70. I've read up a fair bit about the ignition setup but havent found any info about why I can't use my stock smallport dizzy with an msd setup, why can you only use a bluetop or a modified 4k dizzy? I have a smallport dizzy but haven't been able to find any bluetop dizzies anywhere. Any aftermarket ones around? Any help is greatly appreciated. Cheers.
