In Toyota-speak, U in the right-hand side of an engine code refers to Japanese emissions-spec, as opposed to the C for California that most Australian ones get. Nothing to write home really from what I remember, most likely just different vacuum hoses et al, I'll have a look in my K-series engine manual when I get home and see what it mentions You'll see it also in things like 2TGEU and 18RGEU, most of which have arrived on our shores from Japanese imports.
