Custom Whitewalls: New Business In Sa

TOM

Recommended Posts

Hi Guys,

My housemate Karl finally has all the equipment and paint to start his new Whitewall business.

Karl will come to you, and prices start from $80 for 4 x standard single whitewalls like below. Price depends on whitewall thickness (doubles slightly more) and distance to travel. Based in Eastern Suburbs.

He is using the same methods, equipment and paint as Derryl from Whitewalls SA, and is doing brilliant work.

Available colours are: WHITE, RED, BLUE, YELLOW, GREEN. Custom colours can be mixed but take more time and patience.

Here are some pics and brief explanations of the process and the results. More pics will be added as more cars are done, with owners permission of course.

First step is to clean the tyre with a special solution:

Second step is to blacken the tyre. Two options here - full gloss "wet look" or a dry look which is water based.

Next step is to rough up the area to be painted so the paint will stick. The machine rotates the tyre throughout all the next steps.

Then two layers of different paint are applied, with a quick blow dry in between coats

Finally, a layer of protective laquer is applied to mainatin the whiteness and prevent marks appearing through cleaning and general use.

And the results on my car:

After waiting ages for new and improved equipment to arrive from the states, Custom Whitewalls is now doing regular jobs with great results!

Most recent was today - Tally's recently acquired '25

Tally - I love how the wheels are rusted behind the hubcaps - so rat! I thought they were painted that way when I first saw it...

Friend's newly acquired daily MS123 Crown limo - fitted with original Tasmans for shits and giggles. Find another one that looks like this!!!

Considering the wheels are way older than the car, we all thought it looked freaking awesome! They may even stay on for a while...

Thats a good point man - was meaning to address that.

Due to potential legal issues it is not possible to whitewall over areas of the tyre that have lettering on them - the preparation process scrubs the writing out. Essentailly the tyre still needs all identification and branding to be clearly visible.

We've found that most tyres (barring low profile sports tyres) have enough room for a whitewall without the need to cut into the lettering, but it generally helps to see the tyre(s) first to make sure.

Incidentally, it also helps if the tyres are not brand new (6 months or 1000k's) as they can stain from underneath the paint when they have that new tyre "shine" to them.

Cheers,

Tom and Karl
