Robbie Butler -'79 Drag News

I've only just come across this article, and remember seeing Robbie racing at Surfers. I was there one time i'm sure he did a 12.8 down the strip. I had a ke16 panel van, with similar work done to the engine as Robbie's, and i could also squeeze 9,500 out of her. The head work took ages, used a band saw to cut up a couple of 4K heads to see how much I could hand grind out of the ports. I also ran an Ivan Tighe cam, and 2 x DCOE 45 webbers. One of the cams i tried was 58/85 , ran like shit under 3500, but came on song around 5000 through to 9500. i ran a standard corolla diff, 3.7 / 1, and that was half my problem with the revs i had available, crossing the line still in 3 rd gear. Had a bit of a problem burning out standard clutch plates as well. Robbie from memory ran an old Hi Ace / Stout diff at 5.8 / 1, allowed him to use all those revs. I soon learned not to trust the stock 4K fan blade, had one let go at 9500, sent 1 blade right through the bonnet. One day i'll find another KE 16 or KE 20 and have some fun.
