I spent today cleaning out my own shed so that I actually have some space to move, as I've just been dumping stuff in there at random. Then moved on to Sudi who is being used as mobile car parts storage atm & organised the gear in her. I even (dear lord) threw out my old door trims from Blue Thing as well, since I replaced them with spare TC items I have no use for them! carbonboy Posted April 17, 2011 Author Report Share Posted April 17, 2011 Well today didnt go as I expected :( I rolled up at my mates house to help him unload his project off the trailer & into his shed as he couldnt be arsed doing it at 1am when he got back. I ended up getting about 3 sips into the coffee waiting for me when I started coughing pretty hard & couldnt stop for about 15 min. Just as a by the by, no I hadnt been drinking last night. When I did manage to stop coughing, I proceeded to be violently sick in the backyard. After this it was time for a little lie down thinking I'd feel better after that. But after crashing on the couch with a blanket & hot water bottle I found myself shivering uncontrolably to the point where my back started to cramp up. 15mins of being in a hot shower later I was still shaking, so my mates decided we were going to the hospital. I managed about 100m through the carpark before I was struggling to stand up let alone walk so they got me a wheelchair & pushed me the rest of the way, blanket, spew bucket & all! Care to have a guess what medical treatment I recieved? 2 Panadol (codeine equals lots more vomiting)& a 3 hour plus wait for no f***ing sign of a doctor. Sure, admit the 15 year old girl with a sprained ankle (which she's putting weight on so it aint that bad) in front of me, sure even the 2 year old kid with a cough can go in. But the guy who, 6 hours ago was quite physically okay & is now barely capable of walking, is still dry retching in the waiting room & has a 160 BPM heartrate sitting still can just wait some more apparently. Probably not the right thing to do, but I finally cracked the shits, dragged myself up & staggered out. If I wanted to take 2 panadol & sit around watching V8 Supercars for over 3 hours, I'D DO IT AT HOME!!! :angrybird: I may be being a little bit dramaqueen-esque here, but it just kills my faith in governments when one of their priorities ISNT to you know, make sure the people who pay their taxes & vote for them are looked after? Sorry, I shouldnt start up a rant, I'm too tired & sore for it. No engine or gearbox but there's some major plans in place apparently so no issues there. I've finally gotten off my arse & scuffed back the primer on the drivers side sills & taken to them with body filler. The plan is to just smooth them out, not fill in completely or my trim wont clip back on. :wink: This bit down the A-pillar was a pain. Requiring the making of a custom scraper. carbonboy Posted April 23, 2011 Author Report Share Posted April 23, 2011 (edited) This afternoon I decided to bite the bullet & put my newly acquired welding skills into practice. The first step was to get a rough idea of how much metal had rusted beyond redemption. A little bit of 'exploration' grinding later. After grinding, I noticed these two patches...It appears someone had beaten me to this at some stage of its life. Underneath, rust bubbling around all over the place on the bottom. Hatch ventilation version 1.0 :wink: The guilty (rusty) party. Edges cleaned up with a grinder, paint removed from weld areas & thorough wash with wax & grease remover. Then I took the piece I cut out to my other TC & traced the outline of the piece, adding 5mm all around to allow for trimming. Shown here is the fully hectik shield I set up to prevent damage to items in the car from sparks generated during the cutting process. Oh bugger, now I have a big hole in my storage room... Problem solved! This outta keep the bugs out. The next step was to go back to the build & test fit the new piece. It was a simple matter of placing it inside the wheel tub, line up & scribe a cut line. A few minutes work with a set of tin-snips (thankyou roofing component of my apprenticeship!) & this is how it sat. Literally... I think I got lucky & it fitted so nicely it just sat there for me. I didnt trust it to stay there though, so it was braced with jackstands underneath, a welding magnet & a clamp until I could tack it into place. Yes, I'm using Oxygen/Acetylene, not a MIG welder. Couldnt go much further than this as things needed a little tweaking due to minor heat distortion & it was a bit late for hammer/dolly work! Blew a few small holes at first, but these were easliy filled. 1.4mm filler rod FTW! View from the outside, some areas of good penetration, some not so good. Will do a run around the outside later to make sure its all sound. Nothing attracts pussy like a guy working on a 'rolla...except one holding the cat food box! Will finish in the daylight hours, maybe even get a start on that sunroof hole... :yes: I have the bit I need cut out & ready to go, just wanted to hone the skills on a section not as easily seen as the roof. :blush: Before anyone asks, NO, I did not cut this out of Blue Things roof. :laff: I cut it from her former bonnet which I warped the sides of making the mould for the carbon item. Well this side anywho. Okay, so it aint MIG-neat, but its sound. Now for the drivers side. An interesting way of getting the right fit... Tack, tap with hammer, tack, tap with...repeat! All done! :yes: Not all the weld run looked like this, but a clean up with a grinder will help me find any dodgy spots. *fingers crossed there are none* That darn cat! Started running some small weld sections. It was at this point I ran out of acetylene. :bash: >| :bash: Public holiday, BOC not open...sooo close!! On the upside, once I get a fresh cylinder I'll be able to finish the sunroof & fix the broken hinge on the shed door. Bloody hard to open when the door only has one hinge, could do it with the arc welder but I so prefer the oxy over it I lack the motivation to dig it out of my shed. Going to use today as an actual day off over this long, long weekend & try to get prepared for going back to work. :( I'm glad I don't do metalwork for a living, I take forever to do anything that a profesional would finish before lunch :P On the upside, I'm not paying labour costs! It was bloody cold last night when I called it quits, so I went back today with a small brainwave. I left the cylinder out in the sun for about 10 minutes & I think I managed to eke enough gas pressure out of it to finsih of the job! WIN! A bit of buckling/distortion to deal with but at least my sunroof will now fit!
