If you're going to go to the trouble of pulling out the existing engine, why go for a 4A-GE? Why not go for a 4A-GZE instead?

 

And why are you going to pull out the existing engine?

 

And are you sure it's a 4A-FE? I thought the AE10x usually had either the 20v 4A-GE (1.6L) or the 7A-FE (1.8L), but I could be wrong.

well i haven't checked out how much a 4agze is yet. the 20v is costing me all up just without the gear box 1100. with 114000 kz.

yeah mate positive 96 came out in the 4a Fe . csi. but the cs x came out in the 7afe.

 

um well my current engine has 345000 its gonna cost me more to rebuild than to pull out and put the 4a GE in .

 

like I'm not clueless. was just wondering if ill need a new gearbox I'm pretty sure i will. but just in case y purchase one if i can use my current one. and as for the mounts i just assumed since the 4th gen silver top came out in 101 wouldn't need new mounts and since its from the same family that 4a.

Australian-delivered AE101 and 102 hatches and sedans had the 4AFE and 7AFE respectively, no 4AGE. The 20Vs came in the grey import AE101 Levin/Trueno 2-doors.

How they jumped from the 4A series to the 7A.

I wouldn't say so. The 4A-FE and the 7A-FE are very much alike, with the 7A having a larger stroke of 85.5 mm, instead of 77.0 mm (but the same bore of 81.0 mm) compared to the 4A, thus making it a 1.8L engine instead of 1.6L as all the 4A engines are.

 

I suspect that the 5A or 6A engines were not as popular here because they were smaller (5A = 1.5L, 6A = 1.4L) and thus made less power then the 4A or 7A engines when fitted with the same air/fuel delivery systems and simular camshaft profiles.

 

In the AE9x series, initially the engine options were all 4A or 6A based:

in order of least to most power:

6A-FC = 61kw @ unknown rpm / 117Nm @ unknown rpm,

4A-FC = 71kw @ 6000rpm / 129Nm @ 3600 rpm,

4A-FE = 85kw @ 6000rpm / 137Nm @ 4800 rpm,

4A-GE = 100kw @ 7200rpm / 149Nm @ 4800 rpm,

 

but with the 2nd series of the A9x series, the 7A-FE was introduced and the Carb engine options were removed, thus the options were:

4A-FE = 85kw @ 6000rpm / 137Nm @ 4800 rpm,

7A-FE = 86kw @ 5600rpm / 155Nm @ 4400rpm,

4A-GE = 100kw @ 7200rpm / 149Nm @ 4800 rpm

 

Corollas with the 7A-FE can usually be spotted with the 1.8 badge or sticker.

 

Of course, I could be wrong in some aspects, but the 7A wasn't as big a jump as you might think... :)

As Troy said, there's no "jump", the 7A is essentially just a 4AFE with longer stroke and was used in the AE92 beforehand as well. Not at all uncommon for a model of car to come out with several different engine capacities depending on spec, just look at 90s Civics which had 1.3, 1.5 and 1.6L models all at the same time in the EG series)

 

BTW though Troy, the 4AFE never had 85kw in Aus, it was more like 76-77kw (although some of the AE95 4WD wagons apparently came with the high-compression 4AFHE, but they would have been imports from Japan).

Yeah, I thought that figure was a bit too high, but was in a hurry and didn't have time to look up what the aus 4A-FE made. Oh well.

hi bro i am a new user. any body can help me. my car is toyota corolla seca 1997, AE101R model auto transmission, i changed my radiator but some time leeking water from waterpump.its not regular some time,i went to rediator specialist he said to me need to flush .please let me know how to flush my engine and rediator,

But I doubt that will fix a leaking water pump....

Physically yes, as long as you get an exhaust to match (due to differences in the block deck height and the shape of the sump). You'll need the ECU as well and may have to do some extra wiring, as the 7A has a knock sensor whereas the 4A does not.

 

Personally considering the physical effort, and the fact that these cars are cheap, you're probably better off just buying an AE102 Conquest/RV for a couple of grand and swapping over from the 101 any mods that you've done.
