Heya,

Ok so basically I'm kinda new to the whole car mod thing and i was wondering if a few of you guys could help me out.

You see, as with most ke55 owners, i have nothing but stock under the hood and i would like to change that as i am starting to fix up my little beast into...well...an actual beast. iv already started on the interior and exterior and its looking good so far but theres no point on a car looking awesome if it doesnt have the goods to back it up. so now i think its about time to start work on the engine. The only thing is iv got no idea on what engine will fit into the bay of my rolla with not to many problems. i have asked a few people i know, about what kinda engine would be good but everyone has a different answer, so thats why i have turned to you guys for help.

looking for a 5 speed engine that sounds mean and goes hard (because I'm sick of seeing other people's tail lights).

Greatful for any help you can give me.

Cheers

Christine

Yellow with purple, scary combination.. but I kinda like it :hmm:

Drop in a 5K, plug and play.. or if you want to spend lots of money, 4age or SR20.

Google and Rollaclub's search function are your friends. All the info you need is written here, just have to find it :)

As per the FOOMAN.

5k(1500cc)will bolt straight in. 7k(1800cc)will go in with some fairly minor sump and engine mount mods.

The 4age, sr20, ca18 and 3sge with or without turbo can cost a fair bit if you can't do it all yourself. Let alone the headaches that come with conversions. I've done a few Nissan engines in dattos with fit kits and helped with a few rollas with engine conversions and it's alot of time to get it right.

5k is your best bet, They bolt straight into a ke55 and the improvement is great. I went from the 4k to the 5k in my car and even though it's just a little increase it changed the feel of the car.

These cars can be quick with a 'K' motor but they will not be fast.

Have you go an engine size in mind?? 1600cc or 2L or 2.2?? How much power before the leaf springs become hopelessly inadequate??

Bore the 4K out to 5K pistons and fit quad carbs off a bike, extractors/exhaust & a cam. Have the whole lot balanced & lightened.

That's about the best you can do without changing to overhead cam, and if you're going to do that then 4AGE or 3SGE is best unless you want to go Nissan. They will ll take a lot of work and changes to the whole drivetrain.

Why would you bother doing that? A 5K has the same stroke (exact same crank actually) as a 4K, so boring out a 4K to fit 5K pistons gives you the same end result as just putting in a 5K in the first place. That is unless there is some major upside to retaining the 4K head

4k is easier to get then 5k :hmm:

The 5K has hydraulic lifters and a block designed for 80mm pistons, and are harder to find, they're pluses and minuses.

If you have the 4K you are just modding what you have.

I'm always wondering about a Mazda MX5 setup, a 1600 or 1800 designed for RWD...

The BP series engines are a good choice. I'm helping a mate put one in a mk2 escort at the moment. Available turbo too. If you want a more period correct rocker cover the laser tx3 looks great compared to the Mazda one.

Downside being a Mazda many genuine parts cost what you could get a 4age for.

Rebuild the motor with a bit of performance would be the easiest and best bang for your buck,

Rebuild, carb, cam, exhaust, flywheel, ignition, 5spd, clutch, shocks, springs, bushes, pads, tyres.

Thats what I would do as a balanced setup as it doesnt need diff, lsd, engine mounts, aftermarket ecu etc

Probably a few grand all up and you would have a nice setup. Not fast but responsive, reliable and sporty.

Great to drive everyday but has some get up and go when you put your foot down.

Ay guys thanks for your help and ideas.

I'm thinking I'm gonna go with the 4AGE as i think it's more what I'm looking for, rather then any of the k engines.

Umm don't think it will be to much of a headache as iv got a mate who's helpping me out n he knows his stuff.

Already found a 4AGE engine out of another corolla, it's just convincing the guy to sell it to me for a bit less then is asking, is the hard thing. Then just gotta pull it apart, give it some TLC, rebuild it, do a few adjustments, slap her in and away I zoom...(little bit easier said then done, but oh well, that's how ya learn)

Anyways yeah thanks again guys.

I'll keep ya up dated on it.

Haven't been checking the forums lately so I missed this one.

If you are in Canberra and interested in a bolt in engine upgrade for you KE I have a 7k with twin SUs for sale in my KE55. It doesn't make heaps of power, but it's got a lot more than a stock 4k and has got quite a bit of torque.

If you are interested at all (or need some KE55 bits as I'll be wrecking mine soon) send me a PM. Welcome to the Canberra rolla scene.
