Ae86 Levin - Shitbox With A Trd Wing

So here's my first AE86. I've had KE70's and a T18 before, but not a hachi.

So it's either a Dec 83 or a Jan 84 build (not sure) zenki Levin.

Bought it for $1400 full of holes where rust had been cut out. It had no panels on it but came with everything minus a drivers door. The hatch that came with it was cut to bits so I went and got a TRD one with no rust for $200.

Trailered it 300kms home pulling it with an R30 Skyline (that only overheated once through the hills) and left it overnight still strapped to the trailer. The next day I started just bolting stuff on, seeing how it all looked so I can decide on a paint colour and start welding/sanding/priming.

Anyway, here's some photos.

How it came: All packaged up as a DIY kit.

Waterproofed with bubble wrap, a plastic bag, and the tail lights taped on.

Bolting stuff on:

Front starting to come together.

Wing looks pretty tough.

So total expenditure so far:

Car: $1400

Hatch + Spoiler : $200

Total : $1600

If you include fuel and trailer hire, it comes closer to $1800.

Plans are to finish putting it together for now, decide on what I want to do with it, get the 4AC running, then strip it, weld, prime, paint, take it over the pits, get her rego'd, then slammed on longchamps and use her as a daily.

Car hasn't been started in 1 and 1/2 years, all I've done is throw a battery in it. Fuel tank is drained at the moment, so I haven't had a chance to run it. I want to drop the oil, filter and gearbox oil first, replace the fuel filter and get some new plugs and leads on her before I take it for a run. Previous owner said that the head was rebuilt before he bought it, and he only ever ran it a few times. Motor looks really tidy. gearbox feels pretty tight, but I'll give her a good service before I try starting it up.

Did some more putting stuff together today.

Got her to the point where she was drivaeable with the doors tied up. Had to jump start it and re-tune the carby and timing to get her to idle. Still misfires though.

Interior is looking a little sad.

So I did the bumpers today. Sanded them down, primered them using a flexible primer and then sprayed them with bumper paint. Went for satin black. Also painted the grill in gloss black as well as the little number plate light holders, also in gloss black. Went all the way to even colour matching the screw heads. I'm a bit pedantic when it comes to details, want this car pretty spot on when it's finished.

I think the bumper is slightly bent. Might need to set up a couple of vices and leave it for a bit to straighten out.

A video of it's first proper run:

So total expenditure so far:

Car: $1400

Hatch + Spoiler : $200

Oil + Filter: $50

Air + Fuel filter : $15

Bumper primer, bumper paint and paint for grill + rego plate lights : $25

Total : $1690

Wow starting to look better keep it up their going up in value. Wish I held onto mine, although I would never have upgraded to the ke2x series if I did that :)

Haha, won't be selling her in a very long time so for me it's not about the value, I just want to make this (always been my dream car) to be the dream car I've had in my head for nearly a decade.

Nice mate keep going with it n don't give up on it...

Love seeing cars like that given a second chance at life.

Any plans yet?

Glen.

Cheers buddy. Cars like this don't deserve to be parted or scrapped.

Plans are (for now) 4AC stock motor and T50 for daily use. Sanding, welding, priming, then silver with black bumpers and wing, lowered onto 14" longchamps.

Maybe further on I'll go 3TG or 18RG or 3SGTE, but it would have to be quad carby. Not so keen on the 4AGE's. EFI in an old corolla feels hollow to me.

nice work so far mate. should be good when you have it all done

Cheers mate, only thing stopping progress are my apprenticeship wages. Need to buy a belt driven compressor, whole bunch of air tools, guns for spraying, welding gear etc. I barely have enough hand tools to do my job let alone restore a car.

I hear ya mate... Doin the same thing with a KE25.But i plan on winning the lottery soon so it shouldnt be a problem for much longer... :2thumbs:

Found a local panelbeater, only a small place that has let me put the car in his workshop and go in and do the work myself with him helping out... Hes not even charging me for storage.

Plus you better start saving for those longchamps...
