Project Binky

Noticed last night, that episode 23 has been released, & watched it over breakfast this morning.

This has got to be the most over engineered car I have ever come across.  I'd hate to see  what would happen, if they stack it, on its initial run, after it is completely finished.  It would start a whole new series, i guess.  The Blinky Project Repair.  That would take another 4 years.

I only keep watching it, because I want to see how they get the engine to function, in such a small space, with ancillaries, some of which they haven't decided upon yet, like the "turbo"  !  Please . . . . . . .  lets get to the engine.

Talking about engines, I read at the weekend, that there is a market in the USA, of wrecked Teslas, where there is a waiting list for Tesla electric motors etc. to use in car conversions.  A few specialist electric car conversion companies have started up, & the only thing slowing them, is not enough wrecked Teslas.  Apparently, most small to medium cars can be converted professionally, for about USD 30-40K, plus engine.  I saw one Tesla engine selling on line for USD 11,900.

Imagine one of those in a KE Rolla ! ! ! !

There are some good utube videos of cars with Tesla engines, doing drag time passes of < 10 sec.

Watched the latest episode of Project Binky last night, which is Episode 29.  Thought I was going to see the shell return from the spray painters, all shiny & new, only to find, that those guys had found something else to completely pull apart, & refurbish.  I really wish, they would get this project finished.  It's a bit like watching grass grow !  I shouldn't complain though, as many of us have pet projects, that go on for years.

Noticed that Project Binky episode 31 is now out.  Thought, WOW !  We are finally going to get to see the engine installed & fired up.

In true Binky style, we still haven't got the Celica motor into the Mini yet.  Looking at the size of it, with turbo & everything, I can't really see how it is all going to fit under the bonnet.

Maybe they are going to fire it up in the Christmas episode, to provide us with a present ?  ( I didn't suggest what year )

I notice Episode 32 of Project Binky is out !

They still haven't got the Toyota motor in the Mini as yet !

All I want to hear, is it start up for the first time !

Looks like we'll still have to wait a while; . . . . . . . . apparently, in the next Episode 33, they are going to paint the Mini's body.

And I thought my long term projects were slow.

At the rate these guys are going, by the time the car is finished, the pair of them will be in a nursing home, & Project Binky, will be straight off to an auto museum somewhere in the UK.

At least with OverHaulin on Channel 9 atm, you see a whole car get completely rebuilt in a week, from the chassis up, in a 30 minute episode.

P.S.  They'll probably just get it finished, then decide to go electric, & start all over again.

Appears Episode 33, where they paint the Mini, has been out for 2 months, & I hadn't picked it up.  It took 9 weeks to paaaaaaaint !

Most painful episode yet.  I reinforced what I've always known; that painting a car as not something for the novice.

Although I nearly fell asleep watching it, there was one thing that caught my eye, & one that caught my ear.

My eye couldn't work out why Tony the unbelievable painter, did not appear to be wearing any eye protection.  (maybe he has disposable "contact lenses", which he discards regularly).

I thought I heard the comment, "Don't know why we go to all this trouble when the car will probably wrapped around a tree in a few months !)

For all of you who have been a fan of Ed China on Wheeler Dealers, Ed has launched his own utube channel, & Episode 1 can be viewed at . . . .

So what's this got to do with Project Binky ?

Apparently, in an upcoming episode, he meets up with those two mad Mini eccentrics on Project Blinky, & they get to share some stories.

P.S.   Actually, I bought his paperback "Grease Junkie", and it is a really good read. I've lent it to two other guys, & they both loved it also, so it's obviously not just me, that enjoys Ed's style.

Well, apparently the three got together 3 years ago, & the inevitable question arose, of "when will the Binky project be finished ?"

And if you like this chat show, then there is always this . . . .

then, of course, if that is not "your cup of tea" (no pun intended), you could simply switch to this . . . .

Well, Well, Well !   Episode 34 of Project Binky is here, & now it is getting interesting.  You have to be amazed at the "attention to detail", in this build.

Can't wait until Episode 35, when believe it or not; the Celica engine is going in, & they are going to START IT.

Project Binky - Episode 34

Enjoy !

I'd sort of got a bit tired of watching Project Binky, as it is a bit like watching grass grow.  Last time I looked was probably about episode 32 or 33.  But as Google does, it advised me, that episode 37 was available.

Project Binky Episode 37

I had a quick look, & good golly, the little Mini is running, . . . . . . . .   but alas, not for long, as you will findout, if you have a gander.

The exercise of Project Binky, appears to be a constant effort to place things in places where there is "not enough room"  Episode 37, is filled in part, about a modification need for the clutch pedal, which just beggers belief.

What worries me about this project is, that they keep talking about crashing it; & if & when they do, it will take another 4-5 years to strip it & repair it again.

At least if my Rolla "conks out", on the side of the road; I can lift the bonnet, & with a few general tools fix most things.  If Binky stops, & it is something at the back of the engine bay, it would take you a week to even get at the area you need to.

I'd love to know, how much this project has cost.  Pretty staggering methinks !

Cheers Banjo
