Ae 71 Points Gap?

Hey all,

 

In my AE71, the points under the distributor that create the spark, have closed up. I can't seem to find the perfect distance, when seperating them because often the engine will die suddenly, I think due to their not being enough distance for an arc to be created?

 

Does anyone have an idea on this?
