you_nes Posted May 11, 2012 Report Posted May 11, 2012 Gents, Got a rude shock the other day when I priced up a pre-built replacement for my diff. So plan B is to try rebuild the (currently running but VERY Loud) center. Before I went out and did all the research for myself I thought I'd "ask RC" if anyone knows, and can recommend, anywhere in and around Melbourne that could replace/reco the pinion and crown gears? Any other advice/tips on rebuilding a 1x diff would be greatly appreciated. Quote
you_nes Posted May 15, 2012 Author Report Posted May 15, 2012 No hints? Surely someone re-faces these gears. Looks like I'll have to do the legwork myself. Quote
philbey Posted May 15, 2012 Report Posted May 15, 2012 You'll be up for a bomb to reface I reckon. diff noise might be fixed with a reshimming, but you'll be up for 500-1000 I suspect. Hunt around for a new diff and you might find a set of gears in better nick. Quote
willofan Posted May 15, 2012 Report Posted May 15, 2012 So many people diagnose the diff to cause a noisy rear end. Make sure you check your axle bearings first before going into diff rebuild land. A road test by swerving side to side and the noise changes is a good indication one of the bearings is shot, axle out and a physical inspection is best. Quote
you_nes Posted May 15, 2012 Author Report Posted May 15, 2012 Done, axle bearings were toast... but so was the centre. The crown and pinion mesh was up the creek and had worn a bad profile into the crown teeth, hence the need for re-face or replace. Quote
