Hello all,
I've been meaning to join this site for a few months now but havnt, now i have and I'm glad Anywho, I'm thinking about buying a 76 KE36, awesome car may i add lol The problem is, RUST (shock horror), its all around the guttering of the roof, I was just wondering, how much would it cost to replace the whole roof down the track, How much with a panelbeater and how much as a home job if i can find someone? The car is only 600 and id be mad not to, August rego. And its the original owner (old bloke) whos had it serviced on time every time. So, i'd appreciate it greatly if you could give me some advice CHEERS |

A shitload. If you can get a donor skin for starters; good ones are usually attached to good cars and hence not for sale.
patching it with steel would be more viable If you want it all steel, patching it is doable, but paying a panelbeater to do it will cost probably 50-100 bucks an hour to cut and weld patchies. -------------------- Take a Geez at my KE16 Wagon thread with the details of my 5K buildup. Yeah I honestly don't think it would be worth it. Like Philbey said t find a rust free roof you need to buy a relatively rust free car. In which case you might aswell just use the rust free car as you good one and this other one can just be parts.
Is it a 4 door wagon or a pano? If its a pano and the rust is mostly at the rear of the roof you could always cut off the roof at the B pillars and make a '36 ute!! -------------------- I am just a worthless liar, I am just an imbecile. I will only complicate you, trust in me and fall aswell.

The other point is that if it's got roof rust, it almost certainly has/had rust in other places.

The gutters may even be letting in water, which runs and pools just about everywhere. The bottoms of all pillars could be shot as well. If you've already got access to the tools and someone with experience, plus you're really keen, then it could be an OK DIY project. Otherwise, as mentioned, you've got buckleys of finding a replacement skin.
Sadly, it might be one to just drive into the ground. |

Cheers for all the advice,
And its a pano Taz, 2 door. I think i might just drive this one for the rego.. and let it go sadly lol and find a decent one down the track what are the chances of the coppers defecting for rust? or can they? lol might go up the road and offer him 400, when i have some time. I'll keep you posted P.S is it actually possible to turn it into a legal ute taz haha? could be an interesting project lol |

Yes you can get defected for rust, but not minor rust. Check the RTA in your state, but I'm pretty sure here you can get defected for holes bigger than a 50c piece.
QUOTE P.S is it actually possible to turn it into a legal ute taz haha? could be an interesting project lol Is it possible? Certainly. There is one getting around Launy where I live. Just need to get the angle grinder onto the B-pillars and then fill the hole behind the seats. Making some sort of tailgate would probably be the hardest bit of the whole exercise. Legal? Again check the RTA in your state, But I can't see it being all that hard to legalise. Here's another idea for you also, just turn it into a trailer.... http://www.rollaclub.com/board/index.php?s...0208&st=540 -------------------- I am just a worthless liar, I am just an imbecile.
