Working on your own car is perhaps one of the most satisfying aspects of modifying cars. Sometimes though, you just don’t know where to start, especially if you are not handy with tools in the first place.
Perhaps you are a quite a DIYer, but your project has grinded to a halt, thanks to parts being out of production, or simply too expensive to purchase. More often than not, the project has simply reached a point where a craftsman would have to take over.
The great news is Motorretro is here to help. Started up by bodywork maestros Georgio Rimi and Vaughan Ryan, Motorretro provides enthusiast classes and a space to learn how to do panel beating, welding and other related skills.
Georgio and Vaughan were classmates at Ultimo TAFE back in 1989, and became fast friends and rivals. Each strived to be the best at panel beating, and after having successful careers and businesses, the pair decided to work together again. Both realised that there were lots of bikes and cars rusting away in sheds, simply because the owners did not have the knowledge or tools to continue restoring them. By offering classes in vehicle body repairs, motorcycle restorations or customising parts, Georgio and Vaughan can impart over 40 years of knowledge and skills to the average bloke having a go.
“We offer our students classes in vehicle body repairs, motorcycle restorations, custom fabrication, welding and traditional coach building skills,” says Vaughan.
He emphasised that classes are limited to 10 students per class. Students learn hands-on in a casual and enjoyable atmosphere, and all skill levels are welcomed. After class hours are available, and students can opt to stay back and work on their own projects, with 90 per cent of the workshop’s tools available for use (subject to conditions, of course).
Keeping up with current technology, Motorretro also offers in-house 3D printing and CAD services for those who want to take a step further in prototyping or customising parts that are no longer made. They also offer car/bike restoration or designing services for those who needs expert help on their projects.

You have bad credit, but you have a great business opportunity that requires a vehicle. It’s stopping you getting started.
Then Rent to Buy is the answer. The product is not new, but now that Australia’s major rent to buy lender is pushing aggressively into the Motor Vehicle funding market. Got an ABN, It’s all good news.
If you need a work vehicle, Ute, Van, Truck etc or just a dual purpose family and work sedan, SVU or wagon. Don’t let your bad credit history deter you.
So, how does it work?
You enter into a finance agreement that lasts for 1 year with approx. 60% residual at that time. You then have 4 options
1. Your business is now established and provided you have made your payments on time, you can convert your loan balance to a main stream lender
2. If you cannot get approved with another lender, you can pay off the residual on a 2 year contract
3. You can payout the balance and own the vehicle
4. You can hand back the vehicle, and walk away at no cost.
Before you proceed, there are other options you may qualify for, that cost less
1. If you are a property owner with more than $100,000 equity and a clear credit file
2. If you have a 20% deposit (cash or trade in) and the vehicle is purchased from a motor dealer. You have a clear credit file
3. You have a history of good credit with your own bank and you apply to them.
How does the cost compare to conventional Bad Credit Finance?
Compared to a good credit loan, if you pay your payments on time and you can refinance your 60% balance with another lender, the total cost of ownership is only approx. 11% more.
If you compare to a bad credit loan, you will probably pay less for Rent to Buy, because you are paying a higher interest rate for the full term of the agreement.
Talking specifics
In the Finance Broker arena, Australia’s major Rent to Buy lender has appointed a limited number of “Platinum Brokers” This select few have been given guidelines to self-approve applications up to $65,000 on the spot.
Applicant’s with defaults less than $5,000,
Guaranteed approval up to $25,000 on production of
1. Signed Application Form
2. A copy of a current Drivers Licence
3. A copy of a current Medicare Card
4. A bill or bank statement with the applicant’s current address
Guaranteed Approval $25,001 to $65,000
Additional requirements to above
1. A business profile
2. Proof of income or future income (e.g. cash-flow projections, contract, bank statements)
3. If a company, Director’s Guarantees.
Applicant’s with defaults in excess of $5,000
1. Requirements as per above
2. Proof Default’s Under arrangement
If you don’t meet the above criteria, there is still a high chance of approval. The lender has a large quantity of trucks and vehicles that have been returned, that they need to remarket. The vehicles are fully repaired and serviced prior to delivery. The lender philosophy is, if we get it onto an agreement, it’s better than it sitting around.
If you have bad credit and need a vehicle, Rent to Buy will get you started. One word of caution. The payments are high for the first 12 month. You need to pay off 40% of the principal balance, compared to approximately 12% on a conventional finance agreement.

Fans will have the chance to snap up some rare memorabilia as racing royalty Allan Moffat prepares to close his famous workshop in Toorak, Melbourne.
The 75-year-old Moffat has elected to sell the property, where he has operated his racing and business affairs since 1961.
The workshop housed all of Allan Moffat Racing’s famous competition vehicles over four decades before being rented by a Porsche repair business in recent years.
With the land to be redeveloped by its new owners, Moffat’s son and current V8 Supercars driver James is organising a garage sale that will offer a variety of items to the public.
“It’s been a big job going through it all but there’s a lot of interesting bits and pieces that we’ve dug up,” said Allan Moffat
“There’s a lot of unique items like Allan Moffat Racing toolboxes and workshop benches, ANZ sponsor banners and Peter Stuyvesant pit boards, as well as some model cars and magazines."
“It’s sad in a way to see the workshop going. I’ve got memories of being in there when I was a kid, but reality dictates that everything has got to move on at some point.”

How to get vehicle finance? Vic Willey of http://www.highpowerfinance.com.au shares some thoughts on this subject.
The problem is the very large sum of money between you and the car and you think it's an impossible target.
Think again - but you need to know what's available, what's required and more importantly, what it's going to cost.
Gauging the size of the car loan industry can be reflected by lenders such as St George and Esanda that each write around $220 million of car loans a month. So there's money available. These are the steps to get your hands on some.
CREDIT HISTORY
The first step is your ability to repay. Your credit history is critical to successfully buying any car on finance.
If you have a bad credit history - a cupboard full of irregular payments, none payments and even a repossession - you have a rocky time ahead getting finance and even then, you'll go to the top of the interest rate scale.
But it's not the end of the world - "If you pay on time for 12 months you can re-establish your credit rating and get lower interest rates," says Vic. "History is that - history. You can turn your credit rating around and that will make life easier and cheaper for the future."
CAR FINANCE
Financing your car - as distinct from paying with cash - is generally the quickest, easiest and most expensive way to get wheels. Recognise that and you're on your way.
One of the biggest attractions of financing through a dealer is that the money business is done virtually on the spot, in the dealership office. That makes it quick and easy, but not necessarily the best option for you and your dollar.
LOANS TYPES VARY
Fixed rate loan agreements are the most common finance arranged for vehicles.
Vic says the recent National Consumer Credit Protection Regulations - which licences financiers and monitors car dealers - had led to banks tightening their criteria on personal loans and that placed more business with the specialist car loan finance companies.
"If the customer has no credit rating, or has a poor rating and has a loan default, we can organise for an existing loan to be paid out," Vic says.
"A loan can be tailored for borrowers on low income, or low disposable incomes. For example, the loan period can be extended so monthly repayments are smaller. That also improves the chances for the loan being approved."
A high credit rating can mean lower interest rates and therefore lower repayments. According to data from loan comparison groups such as Cannex, a low-risk, high credit rated borrower could, for example, have an interest rate of 10 per cent for a secured loan.
But if the loan is unsecured - that is, no collateral is required on the car - then the same person could pay 14 per cent. Commercial rates are lower. A low risk loan could be charged at 7.8 per cent as a base rate and yet as the risk increases, the interest rate may grow to 16 per cent.
REPAYMENT CAPACITY
Financiers use a point-score system to assist in determining repayment capacity. This can be used in conjunction with the Henderson Poverty Index that is a sliding scale taking into account marital status, income, disposable income, length of employment, number of children and so on. Buyers should be aware that used car loan rates are more expensive than new car rates.
"That's based on the car's age," Vic says. "There are other variables as well, mostly affecting insurance, such as the driver's age and driving record, type of car and so on."
Generally, a used car buyer can expect to pay 2-4 per cent more in interest rates than a new-car buyer.
