National Capital Rally.

This is the last round of the ACT Championship series as well as the last round of the Excel series and NSW State Championships. This will be a full field event with plenty of action on and off the stages.

I will be there in the service park with the Specialised Trailers Motorsport Team. If anyone wants to help out we still have a spot or 2 vacant for service crew members on the day. If interested let me know ASAP.

Also if you just want to come out and see the action drop into the service park at the Uriarra settlement located on the old school oval and say hello.

Hot food and drinks are available all day at the service park.

CANBERRA'S CLASSICS.

The upcoming TRUSSME NATIONAL CAPITAL RALLY is to be headed this year by a group of 15 Classic Rally Cars, two of which will be driven by ex Australian Rally Champions Ross Dunkerton and Geoff Portman.

With less than a month to the rally (Nov 25), expectations are high. This year will see even more sideways action than normal, with the appearance of 15 Classic Rally Cars at the head of the field. Ross DUNKERTON, and Geoff PORTMAN are set to re ignite the forests (now called grasslands) of the nation's capital. It has been a long time since both these guys competed in Canberra at the same time. ‘Dunks' has been here many times since those days, competing in (and sometimes winning) the nation's ‘Capital' Rally.

Ross is seven times Australian champion, and is generally considered to be our most successful rally driver of all time. Known as something of a larrikin and TV personality, he has an infectious laugh, and is always out to please the punters. He was placed 2nd recently in Melbourne, and was 4th in NZ when retiring just kilometres from the finish.

Geoff, on the other hand, was always the quiet, serious type. He let his driving tell the story, and with 2 Australian championships and 6 Alpine Rally wins, he has always been rated as one of our fastest ever rally drivers. A year ago, he appeared out of retirement, to win the Alpine rally once again.

It has been many years since Canberra reverberated to the heady sounds of Ford Escort Rs1800s, but many will remember the epic battles Canberra's own Greg Carr and Fred Gocentas had with the likes of Dunkerton, Portman, Brock, Fury and of course, possibly the most famous battle of all, Ari Vatanen during the 1980 Castrol International Rally. Carr and Gocentas won in the end by a margin of only 40 seconds. These were huge events, regularly drawing crowds of 30+ thousand spectators. The only way to get to "the mineshaft" in those days, was to catch a bus, because the roads were blocked by cars!

Ross will be competing in the classics in a Datsun 260Z, with co-driver (and car owner) Alan Stean, from Z cars in Brisbane. They are backed by Silverstone Tyres, which Ross expects to give them an ‘edge' over their rivals in Canberra. With a 2nd in Melbourne, and a 4th at Bega this year, Ross is backing the tremendous power that the Z pushes out – he has always done well in Canberra, and really wants this win.

Geoff Portman will be teamed with his co driver from years ago, Ross Runnalls, and they will be using a Datsun Stanza, similar to the car they used in 1980. It is the same car that Dunkerton and Stean used in Bega, and then at Perth for Rally Australia this year. He has test driven the car, and believes it to be a better car than the ‘works' or factory built cars he ran all those years ago. Geoff is a ‘real' competitor, and does not enter events just to cruise around, when he runs, it is to win, and according to Geoff, he has the car to do just that.

The Stanza is a sister car to the one entered by Darryn Snooks, with co driver and brother, Stuart Snooks. These guys are arguably the quickest crew entered, on recent form that is. Expect them to be on the pace, as they are very fast and have a well oiled crew behind them, run by another Snooks – Justyn, who is responsible for the build of the 2 Stanzas.

So, if you remember the good old days, standing in the pine forests late at night (and not paying for the privilege), listening to the sounds of a BDA Escort being thrashed along some twisty mountain track, headlights flickering in the distance – the noise rising and dropping, as the car gradually gets closer to you (you don't need whistles blown for these things, you have a good 5 – 10 minutes warning that they are coming), and then, as if by magic – it is suddenly upon you, the noise, blaring lights, the choking dust, stones hurtling through the air, the crew straining to see around the next corner, sideways and gone – if you remember this – then you need to be in Canberra on the 25th of November.

Information can be obtained from www.classicrallycars.com - or www.bmsc.com.au , or the Canberra times on the 24th of November.

Accommodation packages are available – www.classicrallycars.com

Spectator information will be available on the above sites in the week prior to the event, or the Canberra Times, FM104.7 and www.rallysportmag.com.au.

The event is backed by Trussme, and is run by the Brindabella Motor Sport Club, and includes 170 kms of special stages. It starts at 11:30 am, November 25, at the Weston Club in Weston, ACT.

The event is also the last round of the 2006 NSW Rally Championship, the Total Traction Services ACT Regional Rally Series, and the Classic Rally Challenge.

The NSW Rally Championship will go down to the line between Michael Boaden in a Mitsubishi Lancer EVO 7 and Darren Williams in an older model Lancer EVO 3. Boaden currently leads by 22 points, but with 32 points on offer there is still a chance for Williams.

The Total Traction Services ACT regional Rally Series is still quite open with past champion John Stilling leading by 11 points from Richard Leitis, both driving Mitsubishi Lancers. There will be quite a variety of cars both 4wd and 2wd in the ACT Series with the likes of Kagan Skipper competing in his Daihatsu Charade Detomaso, a little pocket rocket that can take it up to the 4wds on occasion. Another to watch and from the Subaru camp is Sean Herbert. Although new to the sport this year has set some extremely good stage times and finished an event in the top 3 already.

If you are heading out to spectate there is a great deal to see, with so many different cars. Plenty of action for a full day!

We will see you in the Forests.

Well the Nat Cap has been run and won for another year. I will post official results here once they are available. Dave has some great photo's of the field of rolla's and the others that I am sure he will share with us very soon (thanks Dave).

A BIG thank you to Philba for coming out on a bloody hot, dry and dusty day to help the Specialised Trailers Motorsport crew in the service park for his first time. Your help was great and appreciated not just by Tony and Fro but by me as well as I was still not that crash hot after being sick a few days before. Without service crew Tony & Fro can not go hard and bring home the results they do so thanks again Phil :jamie:

The heat played hard on a few crews and cars, 88 cars started and I think it was 63 cars finished.
