Hi

Can anyone give, or direct me to, the correct Australian tune-up settings for a 4A-C engine. I was given an August 1986 AE82 1587cc.

It would benefit from a tune. I've looked online and can find US and Cailfornian specs only. They may different to Oz.

I would like to know, best plugs, plug gap, ignition timing, (idle speed to set timimg if not around 750rpm).

Also another basic question, are the valves hardened and able to run on Unleaded only?

Ta, Brett

I'm just pulling info from my manuals (Gregorys/Haynes)here but:

Spark Plugs - NGK BPR5EY (or equivalent) Gap @ 0.8mm. My vehicle emissions control sticker from under the bonnet however states a 1.1mm gap, I have run both (on a 2AC) & everything seems fine. :hmm:

Ignition timing - 5 + 2 degrees BTDC @ MAX 900 RPM

Idle speed for M/T - 750 RPM (without power steering) 800 RPM (with power steering)

Idle speed for A/T - 800 RPM (w/o p/s) 900 RPM (with p/s)

When setting the timing, first disconnect the vacuum hose from the vacuum advance unit on the distributor while the engine is running. There should only be two hoses & I'm almost certain its the lower one of the two. Make sure to plug the ends of the hose & then set the timing accordingly.

With the 1986/87 models recheck the timing with the vacuum hose reconnected, it should be 13 degrees BTDC. If not, repeat procedure.

Have fun now!

Edit: As far as I'm aware the Australian delivered models were ULP configured/compatible.

:y: What he said. All 4a-c donks were were made to run on unleaded. Correct me if I'm wrong.

No problems man, glad we passed on the correct information. My 2AC AE80 sat in my backyard for over 2 years while I drove my Twin Cam around. All it needed to fire was a charged battery, some new plugs & fresh fuel. To get it to pass RWC took a bit more work :laff:
