Toyotas, we have an Avalon, a Camry V6, a Diahatsu Charade 91, and an 1986 AE82. All incredibly reliable cars, both V6s are quite quick and handle well.

I also love Valiants, have a VC sedan, 1966, slant six engine. Great cruiser car.

  1. My daughter's AE82 5speed has a noisy speedo and it fluctuates a lot. It has only occurred since it got cold. I assume the 1986 speedo cable needs greasing. The problem is I found it damn hard to undo the knurled nut behind the speedo as the space is tight. #@!!*** Can I undo speedo at gearbox and remove the inner from that end? -AND successfully feed it back into the speedo head.? I want some advice from someone who has done it - before spending ages upside down and perhaps breaking something? Ta, Brett
  2. Hi I got an AE82 for my daughter 2 years ago. 4AC, a tough and good handling little car. 300,000 km, sat in a paddok 2 years and out front here for one; then pretty easy through rego and to get going reliably. I want to check the gearbox oil level. I found what looks like a filler on top of the gearbox tunnel to the left of the battery. Smells like hyppoid 90. I can't see any oil! Plug has a stepped probe that may be a stunted dipstick? How can I tell if it has enough oil? Can someone tell me that from a manual? As I don't want to overfill and stuff the seals. ls correct spec oil hypoid 80-90? Thanks. Cheers, Brett
  3. Thanks carbonboy, I'll try it. I think you helped me as well last time! I am enjoying the car, with a little care and ignoring the odd rattle or noise, it just goes and goes. Cheers, Brett
  4. Hi Can anyone tell me how to remove my rear seat squab on my AE82 sedan? There were mice in the car and its the last place to clean!! There are two catches on the floor, but I'll be damned if I can get them to open. I don't want to damage or distort the catches by using excess force. Aghh! Ta, Brett
  5. Thanks Carbonboy & ae824ate - you've helped a lot. Car standing in a paddock 3years, and out front of my place 12 months, and then starts and runs and easy to tune and passed rego!! Toyota - !!!! BRETT
  6. Hi Can anyone give, or direct me to, the correct Australian tune-up settings for a 4A-C engine. I was given an August 1986 AE82 1587cc. It would benefit from a tune. I've looked online and can find US and Cailfornian specs only. They may different to Oz. I would like to know, best plugs, plug gap, ignition timing, (idle speed to set timimg if not around 750rpm). Also another basic question, are the valves hardened and able to run on Unleaded only? Ta, Brett
