sami Posted January 17, 2006 Report Posted January 17, 2006 I am pretty new at upgrading my car and the person I would normally go to with this type of question has led me astray and resulted in some pretty dodgy workmanship of the work I have had done to my car so hence I don't ask him to help me anymore with my car. The problem I have now is I have just been told that I need to replace everything in my rear for the brakes, now I have drums in there on a ae82 and I have wanted to upgrade to disks for a while just the money is an issue. I have been told that I can replace the rear drums for about $500-$600. I then started thinking would it be easier to just upgrade at this time instead of six months down the track. I have enquired and if I source my own parts a conversion place near me can install the parts I find for about the same price. The thing that is troubling me is that I am severely running out of time and don't have much money to spend on this project. I was wondering if anyone could help me by pointing me in the direction of where I could source the parts, if the conversion is going to be quick and painless and will I need to get a engineers certificate now I have changed a major part of the car, I also already have an sports exhaust (problem area I mentioned) and extractors and have had it lowered with new shocks and springs. If anyone can help me with information I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks Quote
Toyrolla Posted January 27, 2006 Report Posted January 27, 2006 (edited) Sami, Luckily for you, there was a couple of AE82 models that came with rear discs. This means that you don't have to "convert" anything, just buy all the bits and bolt it on. Head to your wreckers, or ask around (some import places may be able to get them as well) Cheers Look for someone wrecking or Parting Out a twinky. They had disc rear and it really is an easy upgrade. You need the rotors, calipers (and pads), backing plate and flex handbrake cable. Check out Twincam.org and Toymods.org.au There are guys on there called The Witzl and Scorpion who are well versed in this and may be selling the parts required. Expect to pay about $280 for the parts. But you will need to add labour, pads, maybe disc machining, fluid etc. And then say goodbye to great handbrake holding when on a hill... http://www.twincam.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=1063&st=0 Edited January 27, 2006 by Toyrolla Quote

irokin Posted January 28, 2006 Report Posted January 28, 2006 Some people reckon that disc brakes don't hold as well on hills as drums. Much of a muchness, if you do it properly you won't ever notice Thats why the R33 GTSt have twin piston caliper disc rears WITH!! a drum brake INSIDE the hat of the disc. Really cool setup :y: Quote
Rolla__Boy Posted January 28, 2006 Report Posted January 28, 2006 Dirty old commodores have a disc brake/drum handbrake setup...it's a silly waste of time, and extra hassle to fix when things go wrong. I don't see cars rolling down hills all that often due to handbrakes not working on discs. And if you don't leave the car in gear you are a fool anyway. Quote
