AE82Newby Posted June 14, 2012 Report Posted June 14, 2012 (edited) My daughter's AE82 5speed has a noisy speedo and it fluctuates a lot. It has only occurred since it got cold. I assume the 1986 speedo cable needs greasing. The problem is I found it damn hard to undo the knurled nut behind the speedo as the space is tight. #@!!*** Can I undo speedo at gearbox and remove the inner from that end? -AND successfully feed it back into the speedo head.? I want some advice from someone who has done it - before spending ages upside down and perhaps breaking something? Ta, Brett Edited June 14, 2012 by AE82Newby Quote
troyota Posted June 14, 2012 Report Posted June 14, 2012 (edited) This was a common issue with these since new. It is quite easy to remove the cluster complete and lube the cable up. Its much easier to lube the cable from that end, i would leave the cable in rather than remove it. If my ageing memory is correct we used to cut a small piece of vaccum line and use it as a spacer between the speedo head and cable. This was designed to stop the fluctuation. All said this was some 25 years ago and my memory is not as good as once it was. Don't use WD40 as a lube, its Ok to clean the cable with it. It wont offer any long term lubrication though.
