Central Locking / Ignition Issue

Hi,

 

We have a 1997 Conquest. Occasionally when locking the doors with the remote, it beeps twice and does not lock. You then have to close the doors with the key. Upon locking it beeps again. When unlocking the car it can't be done with the remote, it must be done with the key.

 

Following this issue, it causes another problem - you can turn the key in the ignition, not even to accessory. The steering wheel is not locked. You have to play with the key numerous times going back and forth until it finally opens up.

 

As mentioned it happens only occasionally probably once a fornight. As the old lady drives the car I would like to get it fixed but have not idea where to start.

 

Any ideas?
