rsdn Posted March 14, 2006 Report Posted March 14, 2006 Hi there again..... i m using rolla 79 KE30 with 4K engine...... i have just change my alternator... i have fitted an reconditioned alternator 70A from a toyota KE70..... damn its expensive..... it cost me RM 125 which is about AUD 46.35.... RM 1 = AUD 0.3708 and the wireman charged RM 50 = AUD 18.54...... because the alternator is a newer version which has a built-in regulator, the wireman altered the existing wiring to fit the new one....... this is my problem now.... 1) the charge or chg light appears 4 a while n goes off when i switch on the air-con. 2) while the air-con running the light also appears n goes off when engage reverse gear 3) the same thing happens when i switch on my signal light and sometimes it goes with rythm of the signal light. 4) at nite again with my air-con on the headlights and the panel lights gets dim and when press the gas pedal the lights get brighter... All these problem occurs only when i switch on the air-con... and these problem didnt occur when i was using my old alternator.... Pls help me.... Thx 4 all ur kind replies... :D Quote
love ke70 Posted March 15, 2006 Report Posted March 15, 2006 this may have nothing to do with the actual new alternator. its just making the new alternator show up faults in the wiring because it is putting more load on the electrical system than normal. in the ke70 i wanted aircon. so i got the unit regassed and when i picked it up they said the unit doesnt come on when we play with the switch but we hard wired it and it works. theres a wiring fault somewhere that you need to get fixed.so i played around and got it to a stage where it would come on when the fan speed was on 4 but nothing else and the aircon switch had nothing to do with the aircon kicking in or not. then found that when this happened it made the headlights dim, the little indicator lights in the dash glow dimly and the indicators glow. the fuel gauge would run up to full and a whole array of other issues. so off to the auto elecs i go and they say yes, its an earthing issue. so i say ok, how difficult is it. they say "will have to clean up all the contacts everywhere to get it to work properly, a serious job" so i get it back 2 days and 245 dollars later, to find, some issues gone. new ones appeared. so i take it back and they spend a further 2 days effing around with evil wiring and cleaning up this and that they say its fixed. this time it was. on asking what they had done they said they had sand blasted every connection they could find and upgraded the earths because what had been happening was due to the age of the wiring the excess load was making currents run backwards and in general, just go effing crazy. why did i tell you this? because this shows that in my experience of old wiring systems they are evil and the issue, although broadly identified is never locatable. just gotta hope you get it when you do a bunch of stuff :D goodluck mate :D Quote
Tham Posted March 27, 2006 Report Posted March 27, 2006 (edited) Hello RSDN, I assume from the currency you mentioned, that you are in Malaysia. If you are in KL, maybe try this wireman who installed his secondhand alternator in my KE70 for RM150 a few years ago. So far, it is still functioning well, hopefully will last a a bit longer yet. Mr Woo Chee Meng Kim Meng Battery Electrical Service 10, Jln 1/77B Off Jln Changkat Thamby Dollah 55100 Kuala Lumpur Tel: 2141-9017 HP: 012-2011 880 It's at the side road opposite the former Shaw Parade (currently The Store in Pudu. It was one with an electronic regulator, taken from a Nissan Sunny, I think. Probably around 50 amps. But if your problem is due to the aged wiring in your car, as Love KE70 mentioned, then nothing much can be done. An electronic alternator has just three wires, pretty simple to wire up really, (the RM50 installation was a bit high), so I don't think your first wireman could have gotten it wrong. I remember during the 80s, installing a RM60 alternator with an electronic regulator, which I had bought from Soon Loy (salvage parts dealer) in Cheras, cost me only RM15. I remember the wireman then did it in maybe 20 minutes. Wiremen will typically charge you at least RM150 these days for the cost of the unit if you buy it from their shop, which usually includes installation. I had bought another alternator from this Sin Lian Seng Auto Parts Trading at the 2nd mile Cheras some time ago as a spare. Was cheated by them, the idiot called K.S. Heng who worked there told me it was an electronic one (which I had asked for). I found out it was a mechanically regulated one one month later when my aircon man took a look at it. That idiot refused to change it. So don't ever go there. Cost me RM65 , I think. An old car will have lots of wiring and other bugs too. I've been having lots of problems in my 1981 old junkie, right now ignition problems. My semi-electronic ignition (made from a Dick Smith kit) just gave way, now running back on points. Will probably convert to a reluctor-type electronic distributor soon. This salvage yard below says it will charge me RM180 for the unit - somewhat expensive. Maybe I'll just keep running on contact points. Soon Choi Trading Co. Lot PT392, 2 1/2 mile Cheras, KL. (It's the first salvage yard along Cheras road). Another established dealer further up the same road, Soon Loy,which has shifted to Kajang, has reconditioned ones for the same price. But I'm told that these units are not so durable. I bought a used wiper motor from them for RM50 to keep as a spare recently. Edited March 27, 2006 by Tham Quote
