  1. Paint stripper & a Lindbide scraper that you pull towards yourself, with replaceable tungsten blades. Be very careful of the edges of the blades digging in, but it does a brilliant job. We did the top edges all down one side.

I'm of the understanding that any paint stripper is applicable? Can I buy household paint stripper if it is cheaper for a larger amount, or is a specific type better?

What did you pay for your Scraper? What should I expect to pay?

    Cheers,

  2. Gday Guys!

I've got a sanding disk for my grinder because I'm trying to take pretty much all the paint off my Ke70, due to there being A) terrible paint and B) surface rust.

What is the best method, that isn't sand blasting to get the paint off? I've began sanding by hand, got half way through the Bonnet and Boot Lid and was over that method, I've heard that lathering the car in Pain Stripper may work, but also heard about the sanding disks for grinders.

What are peoples preferred methods? And with using the Grinding/Sanding Disks, is there a method that works best?

    Thanks guys,

    Ethan.

  3. So hey guys.. Few things to report.

On the 3rd of this month I was going for a cruise in the Supra with some mates down the back of Burnie, on Natone Road (notorious for awesome hill climb road), it'd been raining ridiculously all day and well, the unfortunate happened. Was coming down a left hand off camber sweeper and tapped the brakes when I shouldn't have (was literally doing about 45km/h), the rear started to slide and I span out and hit a speed sign.

The damage was: Rear right hand quarter panel caved in, rear right hand tire well and tyre copped some damage (there were rocks in the bead of the rear left tyre, and that deflated, but was fixed by a tyre place). Needs a wheel alignment or something in the steering is bent because the steering wheel is a bit off centre now.

Was the road we were going down, it's a little hard to tell it's a bit of an incline, but it's quite steep, and after the accident, we were nearly slipping over walking up it, it was that bad.

Was more or less where I ended up after spinning. Reversed back up onto the bank.

The side the took the majority of the damage, you can see the dented rear right fender, and my side skirt and driver side door are also scratched from one of the usual 'cats eyes' white guide posts, that I ended up removing from the rear left wheel arch.

Slightly closer look at the driver side door and skirt damage.

Had to jack up the car in order to remove the tyre that had deflated, was looking rather worse for wear at this stage.

All in all, it was a shit day and what was meant to be a charity run for Jono ended up being 'fund Ethan's insurance claim'.. Not really, I didn't take any money from anyone lol, but my Excess is $1000 so it was an expensive day, to say the least.

P.s. Apologies for the links above, doesn't appear to work with Imageshack on this forum :/

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On a side note, I've bought a sanding disc to attach to my grinder to get the paint of my KE faster than sanding individual panels by hand. What is the recommended method for doing it the fastest, but with decent results?

  4. Damn that's a tidy looking Supra.. and I paid $1.61/Lt for 95 this morning >|

Thanks man, very much appreciated :). I haven't changed a thing on it since it was his, almost don't have the heart to yet. I will say one thing, I hate the front bar, it makes life so difficult for getting in and out of places, I've recently just accepted the fact that I'm never getting up a driveway ever again and just park on the road lol.

It's currently N/A with the 6speed Getrag Gearbox, so when funds permit I think i'll purchase a Series 2 RZ halfcut and use the Front Headlights, Series 2 Stock front bar and of course the 2JZ-GTE (Twin Turbo) motor and probably either sell the stock N/A motor or put it in the Sev! (lol jokes, too much effort)

161c for Premium? What are they smoking where you're from? Lol.

  5. Hey Guys! Thought i'd finally upload some pics of the Supra and a bit of the work i've done on the KSEV so far.

98 Ultimate can suck a dick.

    ---------------------------------------------------------

Definitely not losing interest in the KE just yet, it's just difficult finding daylight to do any work, I need to setup a spot inside the shed, but the sanding is a messy business and it's just easier to do it outside.

Turns out I already own a Compressor (which I knew) and a Paint Gun.. Just gotta buy the paint! :D

    Cheers,

    Ethan.

  6. Hey Guys.

Just thought i'd give a brief update.

Starting with paint preparation at the moment, sanding back to smooth, and fixing all the surface rust. Gonna take a while, but I'm probably just gonna tackle one panel at a time as I don't have a garage to store the car in at the moment, I'm looking to just do a relatively quick paint job, nothing too amazing, just want to get it all one colour for when I begin using it as my daily.

At this stage my plan is:

    1) Per panel, sand it back to smooth and fix any surface rust with a rust converter or something similar

    2) Then hit it with a wax and grease remover and apply a primer filler.

    3) Then sand back minorly and apply another layer of primer, or just go straight to paint.

I don't have a spray gun so I was just gonna go Supercheap Auto Rattlecan Grey with a clear spray over the top for a semi-glossy finish, and hope for the best. However I'm wondering whether it'd be worth just buying/borrowing a gun (I have a compressor) and buying a few litres of decent paint and doing it as properly as possible given my circumstances, not having a booth and all.

It'll be a daily slider, if that's really possible, so I'm not worried about it being show n shine worthy, just want to get it fat and dropped, and one colour.

    Opinions or suggestions anyone?

    ----------------------------------------------------------------

Also, I mentioned in my first post that Jono had a Toyota Supra, well I've since purchased that from his Family so it's at least gone to a good home. I'll post some pictures of it later for those interested.

  7. Hey man! Looks amazing! So much love and effort gone into it, and it all pays off too.

Saw you at Symmons last weekend, I took photos of and was admiring your car on the day, without even realising this thread was here!

You've done an awesome job dude, any future plans still to go?

  8. Where would I find them? Stupid enough question I know, but i've had a decent man's look and i've not turned up much success.

I'm spraying my Rolla Gunmetal Grey and I want bolt ons for my rims to sit under (or should i say on? ;) ).

What is the best way to go about this that people are aware of?

I've seen some amazing examples, this one especially (see attachments)

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

  9. Thanks guys. Really appreciate the support!

In regards to naming the car - I'm not 100% sure what I want to go with, but his gamer name was 'Alfazulu', which was the number plate I wanted to get for it, but unfortunately in Tas, personalized number plates have a 6 character limit, and cost $1200.. o_O

I'm intending on purchasing his Supra at the end of this month from his family also, so that will set my build back a bit, but I don't have the heart to see it go to some bogan that will just use it for skids and disrespect it.

  10. [iNTRODUCTION]

Hey all, my name is Ethan and I'm from Railton, Tasmania.

Depending which way you look at it, I'm either fortunate or rather unfortunate. I was 'fortunate' enough to have inherited my KE70 from one of my best friends, the 'unfortunate' part is that he had to pass away for me to get this opportunity.

We bought this KE with the intention to build it into our own little drift pig purely for learning the basics and getting some sideways action.

He was the purchaser, it was his legally, but it was realistically ours, I had intended on doing a lot of the mechanical work with him, because we were best mates, it was our passion and our project.

Sadly he unexpectedly Committed Suicide on the 12th of December, 2011.

His mum knew our plans and wanted me to continue the project in his memory, it's what he would have wanted, and this is his Memorial Build Thread.

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    [THE HISTORY|

    - We purchased this KE70 for $1500, in Launceston, Tasmania.

    - Sadly, it was a little worse for ware, it had not been garaged a day in it's life by the looks of the exterior, however it was completely granny spec, rocking almost 300,000kms, and as far as we could find out was only owned by one person for 28 years of it's life, it was then passed down to the original owners Grandson whom fortunately for us, did not understand the amazing machine he had been given and sold it.

    - The bloke we bought it from had purchased it off said Grandson and was a local drifter, he had bought it for the same reasons as us, and therefore fully knew what he had, hence the price tag we paid.

    - Jono and I were both working full time, so $1500 was not much in the grand scheme of things.

    - Jono also owned a 96 Toyota Supra and he had bought the KE as a daily while he was doing some work to the Supra for a few weeks, unfortunately within weeks of us getting the KE, Jono passed away.

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    [THE STORIES]

    - One day Jono, I and a couple of our mates decide it's raining and we wanna go and do some 'spirited driving', Jono and I took the KE, our mate Tim took his SC400 Soarer and Matt had his R31 Skyline. We get but 2km from Tim's house, which was the last stop before skids! and Matt and Tim, being obviously faster stop ahead of Jono and I on the side of a backroad, Matt was just explaining to Tim that where we were going often had a nest for cops and to just be careful, it was about this point Jono and I come up behind Tim and Matt in the KE doing about 40km/h and rip the handbrake while on the grass, unfortunately for us, there was a slight bank and the rear wheels slid down the bank faster than the car was actually going, turned the car completely 90' and slammed into the back of the Soarer. This was Tim's baby and the damage which we found to be worth about $700 completely killed the mood of the day and we all just went our separate ways.

The KE and the Soarer seemed to fuse themselves together on impact and required the Soarer to drive away to disconnect the two, surprisingly, the rear left hand side of the Soarer rear bar was almost undamaged, the bumper itself was fine, there was some paint missing and the light was smashed, however the KE was in a right state. Jono didn't look at the KE at the time, he was more worried about getting his head punched in, so as said, we drove off, on the way home I asked him if he saw the damage to the Corolla, he hadn't, so he stopped and looked at it, it was pretty bad, the light was cracked and the entire left rear quarter was caved in. SO what does Jono do? He pops the boot, jumps into it and starts kicking the shit out of the panel from the inside, he even used the tyre iron from memory, the results were surprisingly satisfactory (see pics below), unfortunately I don't have any pics of what it looked like immediately after the accident.

Looking back now, it was a hilarious afternoon and a memory I'll have forever.

    IMG_1031.jpg

The above pic was taken as we were pulled over as aforementioned,

not a bad effort for a roadside job, wish I had one of the panel before the 'beating' haha.

    - Even on 300,000kms with equally as many km's making themselves known on the chassis, this little Sev was bulletproof, we took it out into the harsh Tasmanian wilderness and gave it a right flogging, just abusing the crap out of it, but it seemed to just love it, the engine would flood and stall, we'd give it a minute or two and it would start right back up without a problem, even with the open diff, it loved the dirt/mud/gravel.

    - More stories to come later.

    [THE CAR]

The car is a 1983 Toyota Corolla KE70, featuring the factory 5 speed manual, 4K-C motor with 297xxx kilometres on it.

The exterior is poor with rust spots in some places and the paint has almost completely worn, but I have ways of fixing that.

The interior is 90% perfect with an aftermarket steering wheel and a small crack on the dash, presumably caused by the vinyl shrinking in the direct sunlight, as mentioned, I don't believe it's ever been garaged.

The registration papers say the car is 'mauve', but I don't think it ever has been, especially at this stage (see pics below)

    [THE DREAM]

Jono and I spent many, many hours before even acquiring the Rolla talking about what we wanted to do to it. I wanted bolt on flares, he wanted bonnet mounted mirrors, we both obviously wanted the sweetest dish rims we could find with stretched tires and to have the meanest stance we could.

The ideas kept coming for ages until we were finally able to get our KE.

We were both big fans of the infamous Lloyd Smith who as many on here would know has the amazing 1UZFE powered AE71 (found here for those who don't know), and thus Jono wanted to put a 1UZ into the KE70, he loved the idea of drifting N/A, whereas I'm more of a boost man and would prefer a SR20DET or C18DET swap.

He would always say "YOU CAN'T PUT THAT NISSAN SHIT IN A TOYOTA" (Keeping in mind he also had a Series II Mark IV Supra)

I was lurking around Rollaclub forums the other day and stumbled across this absolute masterpiece.

    IMG_1245.jpg

My jaw dropped when I saw it, it was everything Jono and I had talked about, and I knew this is what I wanted ours to look like in the end.

I'm not certain who this Rolla belongs to, or what it's running under the bonnet, but if anyone knows, please point me in the right direction.

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    [THE PLAN & THE PROGRESS]

I expect, money permitting, the entire build to last anywhere between 24-36 months.

I and some more of Jono's friends will be doing the majority of the work on the car, they've all humbly requested to work on the car as much as they can in order to see this car reach it's full potential.

It's still early days just yet, and I'm still not 100% sure what Engine Swap or Suspension/Handling mods I want to do.

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    [WISHLIST] - Updated 9/1/2012

    - Twin Round Headlights

    - Bonnet Mounted Mirrors

    - Bolt on Arch Flares

    - 15*9" Rota RK-R's, Rota Shakotan's or Watanabe RS

    - SR20DET + associated components

    - Front and Rear Coilovers

    - Rear Differential Mini Spool or Weldy

    - Upgraded Brakes

    - Racing Buckets w/ Harness

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    [CONCLUSION]

As mentioned many times throughout this post, I'm doing this for my mate Jono, it's my memorial build for him, it's my last gift to him and I want to do him proud.

If anyone would like to recommend anything to assist me in the build, or even contribute/donate any parts I would be very greatful.

I hope you all enjoy reading about this build as much as i'm going to enjoy actually doing it.

    Regards,

    Ethan.
