  1. Unfortunately no, only got the one set. The rocker assemblies are the same, so I may only need different length pushrods and the other lifters. However it should still start regardless. I'm thinking maybe the dizzy is 180 degrees out. Also noticed today that the mixture screw on my carby was seated, so it would'nt have got any fuel... which can't help! Will try again tomorrow :glare:
  2. Food for thought... Because it turns over so damn quickly, I still think the valves are not closing properly. According to the Toyota parts line there are three different types of 5K pushrod, and two different types of lifter for the hydraulic rocker gear. I reckon I have a mismatch. :hmm:
  3. Hi guys, I've been piecing my 5K back together and I'm now trying to start it (you may have read my earlier posts), but I'm not having any luck. The camshaft has been replaced with a brand new Genuine Toyota one, and I've installed hydraulic rocker gear (lifters, pushrods, rocker assembly). There's also a new 32/36 Weber on it. I don't think it's the cam as the timing was thoroughly checked, and the carby/ignition seems to be working (as I got it to backfire!). The odd thing is whilst turning the motor over with the key in the ignition, it seems to be turning over too fast, like it has no compression. However when turning it over by hand, the motor feels tight. Anyone have any ideas? I have a hunch that maybe it's a rocker gear issue, perhaps the pushrods are the wrong length or the lifters are stuffed etc. I've not used this rocker gear before, so it's possible. If the valves are being kept open somehow, that would result in a lack of compression right? Please any suggestions will be helpful, I need to get this sorted! Thanks.
  4. Thanks so much! I can do all of that in the shed! :) With any luck it has bolts and not studs, so I can just remove the timing cover on its' own. I have a brand spanking new Genuine Toyota cam to go in it, which is why I want to persevere with the whole thing. I've not done this before, but I reckon if I mark everything out carefully I can do it. I'll replace the sump gasket (of course!) and use the sealant you recommended. One question though... Would I also need to remove the gearbox mount (x-member)? Cheers
  5. Hi all, Attempting to remove the existing camshaft from my 5K to replace it with a new one. My Gregory's handbook states the sump needs to be removed in order to remove the timing cover. It then states the engine needs to be taken out to remove the sump. As the engine is still in the car, this poses a problem for me! Does anybody who's done this before know for certain if this is true? I hope I can remove the timing cover without all this hassle. Thanks.
  6. So that's why I could'nt get my lifters out! I must get a Toyota head gasket after I pull the damn thing apart.
  7. I've got a complete 3K and 4K if anyone wants them? Just saying is all.
  8. Yeah you're right, I spent heaps of time tracking down the Hydro gear for my 5K! :laff: Some bone head converted it to solids and the motor is rattly as all hell. I just bought a GENUINE 5K camshaft from Japan just so I can use the hydro lifters etc. Cost me an arm and a leg too, but will be worth it. I don't understand why people change them. Supposed to be good for 8,000 RPM but how often do you do that? Common sense really...
  9. My 5K has a cam that says "666" on it, anyone know what it is? It feels like a mild, mid-top end cam. My motor is set up well but I need some twin Weber's on it to run properly. I'm considering putting a torquey cam in there. What's the easiest way to change a camshaft? Also are 4K/5K cams the same? Thanks
  10. Thanks again mate, you're a champ. They charged $33 for it. Cheers
  11. Can't believe it, it was there! Thanks for the tip off mate, went there today and picked it up. Seriously thanks very much man.
  12. Really? Too bad I'm stuck in the office all this week, so I don't know how I can get there and check it out. I've got hydro rocker gear lined up anyway from another bloke. Hopefully all the hydro rocker gear is the same on the 5K's, and it will fit. Thanks
  13. Hold on... Is there a difference in pushrod length between the hydraulic lifter 5K with "O" shaped pistons and no lugs, to the hydraulic lifter 5K with "D" shaped pistons and lugs on the head? Someone clarify please!!!
  14. Sorry I should've clarified a bit more. I'm getting the rocker gear, pushrods and lifters from the 5K with hydraulic set up. So it should all work. Cheers
  15. Okay, from the top... My 5K has "D" shaped dished pistons and head with lugs under cylinders 1 and 4. It has solid lifters and adjustable rocker gear. I want to put hydraulic lifters in it. I can get hold of hydraulic rocker gear from the 5K with "O" shaped pistons and no lugs on the head. Question is, will this rocker gear work on my motor? According to Club K my motor is supposed to have the hydraulic rocker gear and the shorter pushrods, as the head is shallower. Thanks
  16. The cam has the numbers "666" engraved on it, if that helps. I've got no idea who did the grind. Hopefully someone does the rocker gear aftermarket, will keep looking. :hmm:
  17. Mate don't do it. I put 15's on my KE-30 2 door and it drove like shit. They fit, but they scrub out over bumps and sharp turns, the ride height is too high, plus the speedo went out by about 15 km/h. The gearing also changes, you can hold it in gear longer but wont accelerate as quickly. If you do use 15's, you'd want a very low profile tyre. Sometimes standard is better.
  18. Dammit, was afraid of that! Sounds like I'm really up the creek with this one. Why wont the hydraulic pushrods match up to my rocker gear? Is it a length difference or something? I placed an add in the WTB section for 5K hydraulic rocker gear, but got zero hits. :bash: Guess I need to keep looking and hope someone sells some.
  19. I've got a KE-30 2 door too, welcome to the club! Your brakes and diff look exactly like mine, so I'd say standard drums and Borg Warner diff. The standard diff on these is big, looks a little out of proportion! Enjoy your 2 door, they are rare and need to be preserved. Had mine for over 5 years now and would'nt trade it for anything. :rolls:
  20. Hi guys, As you may have read I recently put together a tough little 5K for my KE-30 2 door. The motor has 40 thou oversized pistons, lumpy cam, ported head, extractors, MSD ignition blah blah blah. Much to my surprise it has solid lifters and adjustable rockers. The motor was given to me so I did'nt select the cam or rocker gear. The issue is the rocker gear is loud as hell, and I've adjusted the tappets correctly. My theory is the guy that had it before me had the cam ground to suit the hydraulic lifters, and then converted it to soilids afterwards. This would explain the horrible rattle from the rocker gear. I'm intending to put hydraulic rocker gear in it to remedy this, but Toyota only sell the lifters and pushrods. What I need to know is, if I got the hydraulic lifters and pushrods, will they work with my adjustable rockers? Thanks very much.
  21. Okay, thanks. The motor is not stock. It has 40 thou oversize pistons, double row timing chain, stainless steel rings, and the head has been ported, polished and shaved. It also has had a solid lifter conversion. So the plugs out of my 3K will go in the 5K no problems? I just thought they might be a different length, due to the 5K head being shallower than the others. Cheers
  22. Building up my 5K and have a few questions... Does the 5K head require a different spark plug to the 3/4K heads? Also what is the factory BTDC timing for a 5K? Thanks
  23. Okay, makes more sense now. I picked up another 5K head today, is in real good nick so I'll just use that. Not worth cheaping out here, would want it to have decent compression. Thanks for the advice guy's. Think I'll have a much gutsier 5K because of it!
  24. Is it something to do with the fact 5K's have the ignition happen in the cylinder bore itself? Something called a Heron type combustion chamber I think I read somewhere? Don't know alot about this stuff, still trying to get my head around it!
  25. Okay... So why is it that when using a 3K head on a 4K block you get more compression? Is it something to do with flat top pistons? I'm getting a little confused! Cheers.
