demuire Posted August 15, 2004 Report Posted August 15, 2004 (edited) A little while ago we had a discussion about replacing throttle cables with bike ones: if i had to replace a stock cable i would be off to the bike shop to get something like this (kevlar/teflon) http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...item=3692018047 don't skimp and buy the $5 cables at your local shop, they are only good for your little sisters pushbike, buy the best cable they sell. should be simple to adapt to the carb end, the pedal end you would just use an alloy block with a couple of hex screws to hold the cable to the pedal arm (can get them anywhere that sells weber carbs/parts, i can draw you a pic if you like) would cost you a grand total of about $40 and would be much safer than the genuine part IMO i have kevlar/teflon cables on my ke10 at the moment (twin accel cable) and it was a 10 minute job to install them but the linkages etc are all aftermarket Do you buy just the cable, or the cable and the sheath? If you just buy the cable, how do you thread it through the original sheath? Or, if you buy the sheath as well, how do you replicate the throttle body end that has the 2 locking nuts? Any pics? Needing some inspiration here... :D Edited August 15, 2004 by demuire Quote
pro_ke Posted August 15, 2004 Report Posted August 15, 2004 do you have a pic of the throttle body lever you are trying to adapt it to? Quote
demuire Posted August 15, 2004 Author Report Posted August 15, 2004 Not the best picture in the world (will try to take another one tonight), but here is one: I'm using the original KE35 throttle cable, the sheath is threaded on the end, and has 2 nuts. It slots into the bracket behind the throttle body, and then the nuts hold it on. Quote
pro_ke Posted August 16, 2004 Report Posted August 16, 2004 kind of hard to understand what you mean... but heres a guess you attach it to the pedal lever in the cabin with one of those split pin bolts. basically its just a long bolt with a couple of holes in the threaded part and a securing nut + split pin. you put the cable thru the hole and tighten the nuts so they hold the cable.. and the bolt goes thru the accelerator pedal lever. on the TB side your bike cable will have that big round metal lump which i assume should be an easy fit (or at least easy to modify) to hook into your throttle lever on the TB? if not, i would be off to the wreckers to look for linkage parts that you can cut and weld onto your current setup (would really need to see what you have close up to offer an opinion!) edit : the bit where the threaded nuts are on your setup is where the bike sheath should end. you may need to make a little alloy bracket to make sure it stays in the right spot though (piece of alloy with a deep hole would work). the threaded nut part is for the adjustment of the cable, with the above nut/bolt thing you would now adjust the slack at the pedal end Quote
demuire Posted August 16, 2004 Author Report Posted August 16, 2004 Umm... I'll take another photo tonight I think :D Quote
Peter Posted August 16, 2004 Report Posted August 16, 2004 If you look around you will find companies that will make a cable to suit your needs. example, cable operated 4A-g clutch in a KE 10 ( removed slave cylinder and ran cable towards rear of car and then back to clutch fork) Can't remember price but I don't think it was expensive. demuire Posted August 16, 2004 Author Report Posted August 16, 2004 Here it is: I'm guessing on the pedal end I'm going to have to use some sort of washer arrangement, and on the other end umm... Yeah. No idea... Quote
Peter Posted August 16, 2004 Report Posted August 16, 2004 what about just making a new mount It looks as though you are at the end of your tether, whoops sorry, adjustment. possibly by a little remanufacturing of the bracket you will achieve what you want with very litle expense. Quote
demuire Posted August 16, 2004 Author Report Posted August 16, 2004 Quite possibly. The old cable is too long anyway, it is currently wrapped around my brake booster. I did sort of inspect the cable (and oiled it while I was at it), it seems fine... Maybe I'll just stick with it for a bit :D Quote
Peter Posted August 16, 2004 Report Posted August 16, 2004 Just a thought, but what about a front wheel drive cable, possibly AE82 4ac , I'm sure It's the same ' carb' end but don't know about inside and length might be right. Quote
demuire Posted August 16, 2004 Author Report Posted August 16, 2004 Hmm, quite possibly. Might have a poke around some cars the next time I'm at a wreckers... Quote
pro_ke Posted August 16, 2004 Report Posted August 16, 2004 (edited) fook - your setup is dead easy you will jsut have to make a little bracket to hold the cable in place at the TB end ill take some pics now ab Edited August 16, 2004 by pro_ke Quote
pro_ke Posted August 16, 2004 Report Posted August 16, 2004 ok here is the carb end. very similar to what you have. Quote
pro_ke Posted August 16, 2004 Report Posted August 16, 2004 this is the bolt on the pedal that the cable goes through (the grey bit is the cable) so if you need to adjust the cable tension, this is where you do it. Quote
