Couple Questions Bout A Car

just looking into buy the missus a car and she has her eyes set on an ae82 hatch. for starters what would be a good price for a tidy white auto with mags and air-con, and also what are common problems with these cars as i was really only into the older rwd corollas

$1500 to $2000 for a very tidy car with a/c and p/s.

 

they tend to rust around the hatch and the mudgaurd lip area. make sure you get one with a known service history. they tend to corrode heads and blow headgaskets if the car hasnt had proper coolant changes.

 

check for a smokey engine, get someone to watch you drive off, as they can blow smoke at different times.

 

make sure the gearbox shift smoothly and doesnt hold gearchanges, or slip into gears. check the fluid condition.. it should be red, not brown and burnt smelling.

 

look for one that hasnt been stuffed with in the interior (stereo's etc) as the interior plastics are quite brittle and alot of people crack the plastic when modding it or overtightening the screws.

 

ask to take said car to pedders for a 28 point safety check. that will giive you an idea of what the suspension and steering etc is like. look for oil leaks too.

 

basicly their a 20 year old car, and all the usual stuff applies to them as any other vehicle.. its all wear and tear.

well in the first week she's had it, it has done the head in ... no signs of it going when we bought it but now she don't go lol ... i've got some work ahead of me
