popandwar Posted February 13, 2008 Report Posted February 13, 2008 hey i have a major oil leak. a few people have suspected it to be my rear pan seal. how easy is it to fix and is it cheap if i get it done in a garage? logan. Quote
Medicine_Man Posted February 13, 2008 Report Posted February 13, 2008 Do you mean rear main seal? or rear of the sump seal? Sump seal would be easy to do on a hoist, If it is the rear main it means the gearbox has to come out... Quote
popandwar Posted February 13, 2008 Author Report Posted February 13, 2008 um not quite sur must have my words jumbled sorry. if i recall correctly my uncle said it was the one above the clutch hense it slipping. Quote
Medicine_Man Posted February 13, 2008 Report Posted February 13, 2008 Thats the rear main seal (Goes around the crank) means gearbox out, clutch/flywheel off etc. to replace it.. Probably have to replace the sump seal while you are in there (Best done on an car hoist).. Couple of hour job there.. Quote
popandwar Posted February 13, 2008 Author Report Posted February 13, 2008 how bout cost wise if i get a mechanic to do it. Quote
greenmac80 Posted February 13, 2008 Report Posted February 13, 2008 Slipping clutch generally would mean yr getting oil on your pressure plate which does indicate rear main. the seal and oil carrier gasket itself is next to nothing. but the time involved is ridiculous. i'm no major mechanic but it took my a day to do. i got quoted $300 for mine to get done so i did it myself. so yr up for new seal and gasket and new clutch/pressure plate. make sure you can get yr car high enough.
