as the title suggests i am trying to get a 3sge (gen 1, from st162 celica) into a ke55, and i was thinking of trying a tarago gearbox. The tarago is a 1985 model, has a 2c diesel engine and perhaps a g52 box? (i can't confirm this but the second gear ratio is 2.333, and going by this list http://www.geocities.com/motorcity/pit/997.../Gearboxes.html the only 5 speed with that is g52, though I'm happy to be corrected).

So far the bellhousing that came with the 2c has bolted up to the 3sge (the flywheel from the st162 is a bit thinner then the one off the tarago, I'm currently cutting the front of the bellhousing back so it will work hopefully)

But technical issues aside, i wanted to know if using a box from a diesel van would ever work in this setup (the first 3 gear ratios are a bit higher then that off say a w55 box. i have read that a w55 box would be ideal)

Any ideas/ comments are appreciated, I'm not sure if anyone has really dealt with tarago gearboxes before, but i also know they are some knowledgeable people on rollaclub so its worth a shot.

thanks

Jade

I'm pretty sure the W55 and G52 both suffer from the high ratio 1st and 2nd gears. The W57 and the W58 boxes are generally more sourced after because they have less of a ratio jump between 2nd and 3rd. It will work and drive OK, but being geared for a torquey diesel it won't give you the best acceleration due to the rev drop between 2nd and 3rd taking you out of the motor's peak torque range under extreme driving. If it's just a cruiser and not a track car you'll probably not be too frustrated by it.

I know for a fact the G series and W series housings have the same bellhousing so you could use any other W box too.

Thanks for the reply  yep the car is just going to be my daily, so I shouldn't be doing too much extreme driving. Just as long as its not unbearable, and at least now I can always put in a W5x box when I get my hands on one.

I'm not too sure about the strength of the G series boxes, but I'm going to assume that they are pretty decent and can handle anything a gen 1 3sge can throw at it and some.
