MicMac Posted January 29, 2010 Report Posted January 29, 2010 Ok so iv been working on my rolla for nearly a year now, and we are finally getting to the business end of the whole deal (its been really slow cos of work and other commitments) and now it wont start. It has spark, its trying really bloody hard to start, but it just wont quite. We have been using "start-ya-bastard" on it, and it turns over, kind of coughs once or twice, then nothing more. Last night we tried gravity feeding the carby, and it did the same thing, so we assume its been getting petrol. Please, any ideas of things to try or even someone who can tell me the fix, it would be much appreciated. Quote

Taz_Rx Posted January 29, 2010 Report Posted January 29, 2010 Sure the dizzy isn't in 180 degrees out? Moving this to the tech area as well BTW Quote

Taz_Rx Posted January 29, 2010 Report Posted January 29, 2010 Yeah but TDC on the timing pully can also be on the compression stroke. Pull the tappet cover off, or even just the oil cap so you can see the valve rocker for the number one inlet valve. Turn the motor over with a spanner on the crank. You want to see the inlet valve open, then close, and then shortly after the TDC timing mark will line up. This is your proper TDC, not 180* out. Quote

Falken_KE30 Posted January 29, 2010 Report Posted January 29, 2010 Just swap the leads around on dizzy swap #1 with #4 and #2 with #3. Thought my golf was 180 degree out, and tried this, didnt work cause my dizzy was stuffed :). just got a almighty backfire haha Quote
MicMac Posted January 31, 2010 Author Report Posted January 31, 2010 turns out my dizzy was loose as anything, but because i was trying to start it myself, i couldnt see it waving about like no ones business, and a quick tighten up caused the 30 year old beauty to start first time, reminding me exactly why i love toyota. then i discovered the massive leaks in the radiator... another problem for another time unfortunately Quote
