Hey all,

new to the forum bla bla bla anyway,

A Ke70 corolla is on the books for me, but before i buy I'm working out the details of my future plans for the car yadayada.

I'm planning on a W series gearbox to be mated to a 4a-gze motor. The motor in its final stage will be turbo and putting down some pretty ponies so i want a relatively tough and nice box to transmit it.

After a fair bit of research i had decided on getting a custom bell-housing from 'niteparts', because although a bit pricey, the quality is apparently top notch and you can also fit a supercharged 4a flywheel in it will minimal modification.

Then i came across a bright spark who stated that:

"W55,7,8 all will bolt up to a T series engine using a G series bellhousing... Tailshaft in most cars which came with a T50 can be substituted with that of the automatic version, provided they used the A30 or A40."

:D

As you can understand this is music to my ears. But as i have no hands on knowledge with toyota gearboxes (only word of mouth) I would like a second opinion.

Now my question is this:

Can you bolt a W series (example, W58) gearbox to a 4a-gze motor using a G series bell-housing?

Also, if i bought an auto Ke70 and decided to change it to manual early, would the G series bell housing also bolt up to the 4k? (I see no reason why not, seeing both the 4a and 4k bolt to the T series gearbox...)

No...

T50 come with different bellhousings to suit the engine they are behind. ie A series engine to T series box. T series engine to T series box. K engine to T series box.

T series engines share the same pattern with G series.

A series is on its own. and K series is on its own.

Thankyou, but just a little clarification, wouldn't by that logic "A series engine to T series box" -> "T series engines share the same pattern with G series"? So does that mean a G series bell-housing doesn't have the pattern to bolt to the W box??

Found this ages ago, could be worth a look.

A-W bellhousing

Nice find. :D

People use the G series bellhousings to put W5x gearboxes behind T series engines.

BUT. the A series engine has a different bellhousing pattern to both the T and G series engines. So the G series to W5x bellhousing can't be used.

Isn't the 4a-c mounted to a T50 gearbox in the AE71 though? :D

You are confusing between box and engine codes, most Toyota boxes run removable bellhousings so the gearbox can be fitted to multiple engines.

The engine block pattern is very similar between T series engines and G series engines so they will interchange, so a G engine to W box bellhousing can be used to fit a W box to a T engine. Or a T engine to T box bellhousing could be used to fit a T box to a G engine. There is no engine that shares a common block pattern with the A series so you must use a specific bellhousing for the A engine, which for the W55/57/58 is aftermarket only.

To confuse things a little further, the K50 gearbox has an integral bellhousing but comes in two different block patterns. One fits the K series block pattern, the other is for the A series block pattern and they can't be inter-changed. Which is a shame since you can get a K engine to W box bellhousing from some vans for you crazy K series build.

Okay, i think I'm starting to get it.

ae71 uses an A>T bellhousing, making it compatible, BUT the G bellhousing, although using a rear W pattern doesn't have the bolt pattern to mate to an A block.

So, custom it is.

Didn't hurt to ask, but that's topic solved now. Thanks for the help.
