matchew Posted February 5, 2011 Report Posted February 5, 2011 hi new to corollas and the forum, ive owned plenty of old cars including my weekend ride a holden ek wagon, but have recently bought a 79 model corolla sedan, and I'm one of those blokes that can't leave a car standard so I'm not going overboard ive already lowered it put a sunvisor on it and gave it a general clean up, I'm now after some venetians and extractors, but the reason ive posted here is i want to put a 5spd behind the old girl and wodering what box would be best to use for easiest fitment, less modification the better, I'm not sure what ke my car is all i no is its a 79 model with the 1290cc motor, 4 spd box, and similar diff to the old hq's (where theres a plate that bolts on from the back to access the centre) any help would be much appreciated. cheers matty Quote
B.L.Z.BUB Posted February 5, 2011 Report Posted February 5, 2011 What model, I'm guessing its a KE55? You can use pretty much any K50 box but the shifter position changes between the older and newer ones. The k50 KE70 box is a usual upgrade but you need to modify your transmission tunnel, sounds like a mission but it gives you a better shifter position at the same time. Cheers Reed Quote
Sloth Posted February 5, 2011 Report Posted February 5, 2011 I used to have a 79 model KE55. When I upgraded to the 7k it came with a 5 speed box. The shifter was in a slightly different position so we just cut a new hole and welded the old one. I think in the past I've heard that there is actually two different K50 boxes, each with a slightly different shifter position. Quote
matchew Posted February 6, 2011 Author Report Posted February 6, 2011 had a look under the bonnet and yep its a ke55, 4k motor and borgwarner diff, so now where can i find one of these boxs, I'm after the one where i don't have to cut a new hole any hepl appreciated. Quote
19914afc Posted February 6, 2011 Report Posted February 6, 2011 They are out there try looking for kp61 starlet gearbox on trademe.co.nz otherwise just keep searching there out there. Quote
snot35 Posted February 7, 2011 Report Posted February 7, 2011 5 speeds were an option in KE55's. Scour wreckers and you might be lucky. They are a bolt in. In KE70's the rear housing is different and the shifter is further back. As mentioned you'll have to cut a hole in the floor to fit that one. You're probably more likely to find one in a KE55 coupe, but I've found them in sedans before as well. Good luck! Quote
