BlueKsev Posted August 27, 2011 Report Posted August 27, 2011 Hey guys just wondering if you could tell me what this thing is in the ksev and what it does. Well, the hose that comes off the carby and goes to the distributer to do the timing i understand it, but just near the dizzy is a little T join and it has a hose that comes off and it goes to some filter-looking thing and electrical cables. I'm pretty sure its called the spark control system. Iv had it disconnected and the car runs fine without it but i still want to know what it is There's a picture attached for all the people i have confused. Cheers Ben Quote
altezzaclub Posted August 27, 2011 Report Posted August 27, 2011 Mine's an '83 and doesn't have that... Ah- because mine was an auto & we converted it! here- Quote
altezzaclub Posted August 27, 2011 Report Posted August 27, 2011 ..and before you ask, all they can do is reduce the vacuum going to the vac advance unit on the dizzy. Google them for details, I did that years ago. Quote
BlueKsev Posted August 27, 2011 Author Report Posted August 27, 2011 Ah alright thanks. Yeah mines an '83 as well. So it would be alright to remove it you think? I'm just in the process of tidying the engine bay up an getting it lookin' schmick :) Actually while i've got this topic, what have other people done with the Exhaust gas recirculation system? You'll see its a funny canister type thing that has a pipe connecting the exhaust and the intake to let exhaust in. I've already blocked it to stop it working but now i want to get rid of the setup altogether but then il have a hole in the exhaust and the intake Anyone else done this? Is yours still working in your ke70 altezzacub? Cheers Quote
Ben-89 Posted August 27, 2011 Report Posted August 27, 2011 Spark control module it is, the k engine you have is identical to pre 83 4ks with the exception of upgraded emissions control ancillaries. That circular thing on the strut tower is a vacuum valve, and the little box next to it is a "control module" Fact: Wheels magazine back in 83 referred to that as the "ugraded electronics" under the new "Hi-Cam" name plate. All that black box does or did is sense the rpm gear and load and would adjust the running accordingly. Wheels magazine said it netted a 10% power gain over a 1982 ke70 and that it felt a little willing in the upper rev range and through the gears. I do agree with that as I have a low kn pre 83 4kc and have driven a high km 83 mdl 4k and it did feel a little more revvy. Other details were viscous clutch fan, for less drag, revised carburettor, one lesser valve for the egr, air snorkel tapped into the front passenger upper rail, slightly larger exhaust system and finer radiator core.... altezzaclub Posted August 27, 2011 Report Posted August 27, 2011 I blocked everything where there is a red dot, and just kept the green lines. Then threw the whole lot out and fitted SUs and extractors. SOOO much better now than when we bought it! Take a look- http://www.rollaclub.com/board/topic/42407-the-girls-ke70/page__p__445727__fromsearch__1#entry445727 Quote
BlueKsev Posted August 27, 2011 Author Report Posted August 27, 2011 Oh ok so it sounds like i should be keeping the little spark control setup? Depends though, so its definately changing the timing for power and not emissions? And yes i've had a good read of your thread before altezzaclub its good because its mostly stuff you can do yourself on a low budget Yeah i chucked all the emissions control stuff when i got my weber carby. Interesting thing though, i didn't block off the valve that opens the exhaust gas recirculation system sending exhaust into the carby, it already had a ball bearing in one end, and it was only owned by a granny who is the single owner too (until i got my hands on it) so i think it may have been blocked from the factory? snot35 Posted August 27, 2011 Report Posted August 27, 2011 (edited) I removed that gear on mine. Can't say I actually tested before and after, but given I've got a weber as well then the whole system probably doesn't work as intended anyway. I'd imagine the revised exhaust etc of the later KE70's probably account for the "more revvy" feel than this little valve... Edited August 27, 2011 by snot35 Quote
BlueKsev Posted August 28, 2011 Author Report Posted August 28, 2011 Yeah alright well i'll take it out with the pipe blocked, and then put it back on again and unless there's a noticeable difference i'll just get rid of it Cheers Quote
