Moonstone Posted September 13, 2011 Report Posted September 13, 2011 (edited) Hi guys, Summer's coming and the missus is complaining about lack of air. I must therefore get this fixed ASAP! Over the past couple of years, the fan, when selected on (with or without aircon), is running slower and slower. Sometimes it runs so slowly that you can hear it ticking over at only a few revs a second. Slamming the recirc/fresh lever back and forth quite often makes the fan run much faster. I've mentioned this problem to Newtown Toyota and they say it's a fan problem, $800 to replace. Gasp. I have found replacement fans on the net for just over $100. My questions are: 1/ Does the problem sound like a fan issue or a electrical supply issue from say a relay and 2/ If it is a fan problem, does the quote from Newtown sound reasonable in the light of the after-market part on the net? I will be very grateful for any input. Thanks and happy Rolling. Edited September 13, 2011 by Moonstone Quote
philbey Posted September 13, 2011 Report Posted September 13, 2011 Hi there mate, I have a similar concern with my 2 cars, although both are substantially older than yours (30+ and 40+ years). I've often wondered what the likely cause is. I suspect it could be a number of issues: - reduced current to the fan (probably not in your case) - fan bearings have deteriorated. - The fact that you can get it to loosen up leads me to suspect your fan housing has dusty rubbish built up inside. If you can pull the fan assy out yourself, I'd suggest you do that and have a look. Bearings will be evident if the fan doesn't spin freely by hand. Perhaps hook it directly to a battery to test. Give it a good clean and see how it runs. If you can get it out, then you can work out if you should buy a new item. Quote
Medicine_Man Posted September 13, 2011 Report Posted September 13, 2011 I'd say the brushes are getting low, pull it out and take it to an auto sparky to get it checked over.. Quote
