Alrighty well I had a bitch of a time doing this so I thought I'd put up a guide specifically for k engines. I've got an otherwise stock 4k-c engine in a 1980 ke55. before you start - i'd like to say that I'm pretty much re-writing a guide on toymods on this topic. I'd also like to point out that this I'm writing this for people like me who are new to the world of auto-electronics. If you're electrically minded you can probably skim over a lot of stuff here. If you ruin your engine or anything I take no responsibility... i don't know how you could do that, I'm just saying. There are other ways of doing this, such as finding a dizzy that suits that has an inbuil…

I have created a new sub-forum specifically for car electrics, Please feel free to post your questions here. For those of you that may not know, I have recently started an apprenticeship in automotive electrics. I'm still learning but I have a fairly good knowledge of certain things (KE70/AE71/AE82/AE86/Starter Motors/Alternators etc). Even if I don't know the answer I can possibly find out through my boss and co-workers if you need an answer on something. Keep the posts coming.. Oh and by the way, If you live around Brisbane I may be able to help you out with auto electrical work..

Hey all. I have recently purchased this ke55 and currently have no horn or hazard lights. Was going to replace the whole indicator stalk/ wiper stalk/ hazard switch unit but seems I have intermittent wipers and can only find replacement units that have off/high/low on the wipers. Any ideas?

Hi all, I have a 1985 AE82-CS with the original head unit. The CS model has the head unit with only radio and no cassette tape player. Recently the FM radio has stopped working whilst the AM continues to work fine. When I change the source from AM to FM it doesn't even produce static. No fuses seem to have blowen and all wires I can see without removing the unit seem to be connected. My next step would be to remove the head unit and check for any corrosion or back connections within the units internals. I was wondering before I did this if anyone had any other ideas for things to check and if not any advice on removing the head unit without damaging th…

There is nothing more stable, in terms of an electronic ignition system, triggering system; than a "crankshaft mounted", iron toothed, or "flying magnet", trigger wheel. Stable, because there is no need, at all for a C.A.S. (Camshaft Angle Sensor), if You use a trigger wheel with a missing tooth, & run the ECU in a "Wasted Spark" ignition only, or EFI Ign & Inj mode. There is plenty of room usually, down on the crankshaft pulley, to mount quite large diameter wheels, which results in good clean On/Off spacings for either VR or Hall Effect sensors. However, I must admit; that if You are a novice, & going to carry out this mod from scratch, with the engine …

I have no spark coming out of my coil on my 79 ke55. Have tried everything to get spark out of it. The coil is only about 18 months old and worked previously. The only thing that I have done is put another 4k motor in with a 5speed manual, the car was previously auto. The car was running with the auto in it but now won't get any spark. I'm using the original harness to the car. Can anyone think of why I'm not getting any spark

Hello, my car uses a steering column assembly from I believe a KE70. Not sure which variant, but it was imported from japan, and has the wiper stalk on the left, and the turn signals stalk on the right. The wiper motor is not receiving any voltage, and I also need to fix some electrical gremlins on the headlights switching. I am looking if anyone got a pinout diagram for the wiring harness at the bottom for this steering wheel. Pictures for reference:

  11. I know its simple but I couldn't find any info online. The first one is from my 2K engine and the second is an "upgade" from a 4K. Which wire goes where? The old alternator was with a 3 pine fuse and one lose wire connected on "B" screw while the new is just with the 4 screws. Help please.

Have been swapping 4age into my 83 sedan, entire loom was pulled out at some stage and now I’m having trouble putting it back in correctly and getting 4age to start. I can hear my fuel pump going but no starter click or crank at all - definitely not a dead starter. the junction box on the drivers side has plugs that seem to be able to go in multiple spots so to start with I was hoping someone had photos of how the plugs are supposed to be in there so I can get that sorted before moving engine side where I think I will also have issues 🥲 image attached of junction box for reference :)

  15. The switch works, turning on the light. The leads do look connected to the rear windshield, and there is power running through the leads; I tested it with a multimeter. However, it doesn’t seem to defrost, and using a multimeter on the conductive paint itself doesn’t seem to yield any results. What could be wrong here?

Gentlemen, Does anyone know if there is a pulsed out put given by 7KE ECU which can be read as engine RPM? if yes, which pin... Thanks for your help...

  17. Started by Banjo,

We all do this at some time, but here is a variation of a method, I have used for years; which creates a wire join, in your engine bay; under the dash, or in the boot; that You will never have to revisit again, & will last as long as the car. https://youtu.be/lrIefG-bbj8 What is my variation ? Exactly the way this guy does it, but I then solder the joint, & the "shrink tubing" I use, has a heat activated adhesive on the inside, which will not let any moisture inside the joint; which could ultimately cause corosion to any exposed metal of the wire joint. Cheers Banjo

Hi, I have an ‘82 ke70 and most of the cluster doesn’t work and idk why, the Speedo works( obviously cos that’s mechanical) but the clock, fuel gauge and the fuel light don't. The temp also doesn’t work but that doesn’t bother me as I have an aftermarket water temp. not sure if other lights work except the indicators and high beam lights work?. I’ve tried 3 different fuel level senders, checked the plugs at the back of the dash, checked fuses and nothing has changed. Where do I go from here? Does anyone have a decent diagram or even list of all the main wires behind the dash?

  19. I’ve picked up an 82 ke70 4K and the previous owner has done some dodgy wiring. Looks like the main harness has been cut as well as lots of other dodgy stuff (pictured). When I try to crank the engine about 50% of the time I just get a little click (like when the battery is dead flat) and then the other times it only turns over very slowly (even hooked up to another running ae82) I think it’s something to do with the wiring cos it’s very dodgy and I’m not sure what the wires that have been cut or unplugged previously went. Some help identifying or pics of what the engine bay wiring is meant to look like would be great

My KE30 turns 50 next year, & I've planned on giving her a few extra features for her birthday. (I'm only Her second owner) One of the presents is to replace or modify, all lighting, inside & out, with LED lights. Headlights are pretty easy, as you can easily source "H4 bulb compatible" 4 sided LED Hi intensity lights bulbs. I've ordered a set this week, so that will be the first step. One of the best things you can do to an olde Rolla, is increase the capacity of the battery & alternator, although replacing the original crappy load bearing wiring, with cable a lot thicker, would be a close second. (I've already done that) …

Trying to help a friend with his 74 Corolla. I don’t know anything about Toyota and he has no documentation for the car so I need some help. I installed a new battery, but the car still has no electrical power. I believe they must have blown a main fuse while trying to jump the car, charge the battery, etc. my question is, does anyone have a fuse diagram to show what fuses are what and locations? All the writing on his is worn to where I can’t read it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Over the years, the ignition system, & how it functions; has shown itself, to become an area of our Rollas, that "non electrical" members, struggle with; especially when confronted with an "uncoperative", or "disfunctional" ignition system. The following article on the DIYAutoTune website, has got to be one of the best & clearest explanations, as to how ignition systems work, & what sort of issues are common. Read it a couple of times, & I think you will agree. https://www.diyautotune.com/news/tuning-tips/ignition-system-remix-by-greg-banish/ Cheers Banjo

Hi Folks, I've had Rollas for years, & the issue of the horn "not working" is a perennial (enduring or continually recurring) problem. It always turns out to be the same thing. The spring pressured brass pin, finally wearing out, until it loses contact with the brass ring on the back of the steering wheel. I've tried everything over the years, filing the pin down in length, so it's pressure on the plate is minimal. I've always used an electrical lubricant on the ring, (to stop is squeaking), but after a year or so, there is no horn. Well it did it again last week, & this time, I am determined to find a new way to get the eart…

Hello to all the good people here, I last posted in this forum way back in 2013, from my records. I was driving a KE70 from 1994 until 2010, after which I drove a Proton Saga, until now. This has the Mitsubishi 4G13, 1300 cc engine, overhead cam. I still come back here because the people here are very knowledgeable and helpful. My stock starter is still usable, though getting old, and I was thinking of keeping a spare. These days, they have standard or normal starters, and "high speed" starters. (I am not sure, but I think these high speed starters are also called "planetary gear reduction" starters.) I am not sure which type the car cam…

Hey guys I've been going through the posts and can't find a few answers.. I have an ae92 csi corolla hatch that I'm putting a GTI cluster and dash into, I'm curious what oil pressure unit I need? do any of the stock loom plugs fit into the cluster? If not, what do I need to do? Also my car didn't have a stock tacho and the GTi cluster does, can I use the signal wire I was using for my monster tacho for the GTi tacho? Or is it already In the stock loom? Thanks again

Hello, first of all i need to apologize for this post since its kinda dumb because my dumbass forgot to take photos. So, i was taking apart my ke25 dash so i replace the odometer with the one from my ke20, the annual inspection is coming up and i want to permanently have the ke25 tach in my ke20, the issue I'm having is the position of the cables of the tach, since i forgot them, i took a look at the ta22 dashes that i have, but all of them seem to be different. If anyone could tell me the position of the cables i would be really grateful . For better understanding I attached some photos. Thank you

Hi guys. Does the ke20 have 2 wiper speeds? When I pull the wiper button it has 2 clicks but both are the same slow speed. When I got the car The second click out stopped the wipers all together but that is fixed as I found there was a loose wire. I was expecting the wipers to be faster on the second click. Does this mean the wiper motor is busted?

Hi All, I'm coming to the end of my 4AGE bigport swap into an AE71 & I have no spark to the plugs. I've tried connecting a spark plug to the ignition coil directly with a lead, then holding near a ground but no arc. I'm thinking the coil or ignition assembly is bad/wired incorrectly? The ignition coil has a black/orange wire that gets 12v on "run" and "start". The only other wires going to the coil come from the ignition assembly. Below is what I've checked so far. - Coil +ve has 12v when key is in "run" position - Coil -ve has 12v when key is in "run" position (is this correct?) - Coil primary resistance is around 1 - Coil se…

  30. Hi guys! Just picked up my first KE30. It's got a 4K and 5 Speed. Car was fine for the first few weeks since purchase, but recently started it and it wasn't sounding right. It was running rough. I drove it up the block and every time I shifted gears, I felt like I was grinding through gears. Quickly got it back home, and it stopped in the driveway. Haven't been able to start it since. The radio wasn't working when I first started it up, so that was probably the first sign. I changed the battery but now it's not clicking over. I suspect that it's the starter, but I don't know whether that explains why it was running rough to begin with. I've …

Hi Guys, I am rewiring a 7KE engine (DIY). I think I can see 2 sensors near the thermostatic valve and would like to know the following. Deeply Appreciate you experts help. 1. How many temperature sensors does 7kE has and where are they located. 2. What is the purpose of them. ( I mean is one for the computer box and other to the dash board, etc...) I have attached a picture. Your support to understand this is very much appreciated.. Thanks..

  33. My 1974 (48 yo) KE30 2 door Rolla has a tow bar, & often gets asked to tow a load of green waste to the local dump. This weekend was such an occasion, & after dropping off the second load, I started the car up, as normal; without issues, & slowly drove out of the dump. As I drove up a slight rise towards the entrance gates, I heard a scratching/grating noise, emanating from under the car. I assumed I had picked some scrap up under the car, that was caught; & was grating on the asphalt. As soon as I exited the dump, I pulled onto the side of the road, left the engine running & quickly looked under the car. Nothing at all ! I then lifted the bonnet, …

  36. Hi Guys, I am having a 7K E engine fitted to a samurai and at the garage while painting they had removed and refitted the wiring harness. Engine works. But there is a component in the wiring that is missing and only i have the "clip" or the mount bracket kinda thing. I remember it to be a round thing sitting inside the bracket. I have included several pictures of the empty bracket and would like your help to identify and replace this. there are several open connectors I am not sure which is which. Hey everyone, new to this forum. Got my 1996 corolla off a guy my uncle knew over a year ago. I've always noticed a few unplugged wires since I got it, but it runs fine except it can get quite hot. Does anyone have any ideas to what the unplugged wires are for. They all seem to female plugs so none of them would plug into each other. Thanks for any help. Click link for photos: photos

  39. At the weekend, I gave the engine a quick spray with the degreaser, left it a few minutes, then hosed it down. Normally the engine starts up straight after this, as I am careful where I direct the hose nozzle. Anyway, this time it didn't start, so off I go looking for the issue. Turned out in the end, to be water inside a supposedly "sealed" standard 30A automotive relay, I use to supply power to my high energy ignition coil, so the higher amperes, don't run through the ignition switch. Anyway, replaced relay coil, & located it a bit higher up in the engine bay. However, while checking things ignition, I lifted the dizzy cap, to see any water…
