Hi Guys,

If this is in the wrong section I'm sorry.

Hoping someone can help - car is import, based loosely on gt starlet/toyota paseo. Automatic, 1.5L engine.

Car is silent when not moving. Some days, I experience a grinding metal noise coming from the front drivers side wheel. Some days there is clunking that makes the car jerk like backfiring, but its clunking, not backfiring.

Some days, the car is completely silent.

I am a bit concerned as I DID have a hit at the drivers front wheel back in september of last year, but this has come on within the last week or so. At first I thought wheel bearings or maybe brakes and was gearing up to go get the brake pads replaced and wheel bearings done.

Now that the noise has all but disappeared I have no idea what to think :y:

anyone?

Yeah its just weird that it was so severe i thought the car was going to fall apart on me, to completely nothing?

thats what had me worrying. I am going to pull the car apart soon anyway, i just would really appreciate figuring it out so i can get brand new parts for it in time to replace it.

or at least have some idea of what to look for, so I don't get ripped off by some mechanic :y:

Well as far as I can tell, it would be collapsed wheel bearings. I dunno why/how the noise could stop though?

Could have been stuff caught up in the brakes I suppose too, that would sound like grinding, and could make the car jerk, and if it dislodges, could explain why it suddenly stopped.

Sorry for the jokes...was just playin :y:

maybe take it to a place like pedders and get one of their "21 point safety checks", or something. shouldn't cost to much, but give you an idea of any problems.... then you can take it away and suss it out and fix it yourself.

.... and making yourself look like a complete tool.

Wheel bearings maybe. How much meat is on the brake pads?

Does it feel suspension? The jerking could possibly be something flogged out. Maybe a trip to Pedders for a $14 check? They'll also tell you about CV's and the like, too. They'll soon tell you if anything is REALLY bad, and smile sweetly and say "I'll think about it " for everything else. :y:

Pedders check is a good idea. wonder if they are open tomorrow. I can definitely do the smile sweetly thing. I'll go "i don't know anything about cars so let me see if i can fit the price into my budget and ill get back to you :P" :y:

Thanks guys lifesavers :P

A short skirt and a low cut top and you won't have to pay $14.:y:

i'd be thinking wheel bearing, had my old camry and Celica do the same thing.

some days quite but others the wheel sounded like it was going to fall off.

just made sure the hub nut isn't loose, doesn't take much, they need to have about 150nm of torque on them to keep the wheel bearing quite.
