kingmatt Posted January 30, 2006 Report Posted January 30, 2006 I've bought a ke70 corolla and had fun removing the rust, repairing the boot seal and repainting. I've really enjoyed it, but not so much I'm in a hurry to do it again. I've noticed that directly underneath the boot is a reverse angled lip that has 4 holes in it. (Above the number plate) The holes are original corolla manufacturer. I figure that the rust is partly the result of moisture entering the boot area through these holes, and not being easily able to escape. Consequently may be the source for internal rust within the boot area, particularly common to the petrol filler area of this model car. Anyone else know what I mean? Anybody know why I can't grommet these holes to prevent the moisture? Was there a bit of trim that normally covered these holes thats gone astray? Thanks for replies. Matt Quote
Jason Posted January 30, 2006 Report Posted January 30, 2006 go to super cheap and get some tyctal, it will rust proof anything get a paint brush or syringe to get into those hard to reach places. Quote
Teddy Posted January 30, 2006 Report Posted January 30, 2006 You mean this area? are you can see, its just a crappy little plastic panel that goes across there. Yup, rust in them is a real problem ! Where did that pic go that i uploaded ?! Garh !!!!!! Quote
Rolla__Boy Posted January 30, 2006 Report Posted January 30, 2006 Having a few troubles with the uploads Ted, I believe it's ok if you host it somewhere else though Quote
kingmatt Posted January 30, 2006 Author Report Posted January 30, 2006 Thanks for the replies. If its a piece of plastic, then closing up the holes with a grommet is probably the best thing I can do to the car. I think I recall a mechanic mate of mine some years ago going off about how that piece of plastic/holes is the cause (in his eyes) of the rear end rust in that model. I'll stay tuned and see if anyone agrees. BTW I really appreciate finding a place of pasionnate corolla owners. Quote
love ke70 Posted January 30, 2006 Report Posted January 30, 2006 that part is evil, mine always falls off when i crank the stereo, really should sikaflex the bastard in would prob help seal up the boot from this moisture aswell, but the thing is theres bungs in the boot, and they prob let a little moisture in too. and where the quarter panel meets the boot floor panel, right down the side on the bottom, like the very bottom edge of the rear quarter panel, usually there are gaps in there which allow moisture in, but those might stop the bottom of those rear quarters rusting out quite so much, but in my opionion get something that will stop it rusting and spray it all in that, of course i didnt do this when i had my car stripped back, but if i do it again i will hope this helps :y: Quote
kingmatt Posted January 31, 2006 Author Report Posted January 31, 2006 Teddy thanks for the pic (yep, thats it) and love ke70 will look for the quarter panel boot interface and sort it out. Thanks a lot, it may seem stupid but I didn't want to block them off if it made the problem worse. BTW, repaired the rear seal using superglue. Works a treat. Matt Quote
love ke70 Posted January 31, 2006 Report Posted January 31, 2006 superglue works? what brand? my crazy clarks stuff didnt :P but then the spare parts car seal wasnt too bad :y: Quote
kingmatt Posted February 1, 2006 Author Report Posted February 1, 2006 Wrecker said the upholsterer down the road used locktite, so they used locktite. I used selleys cause that was all I could find in name brand superglue. Quote
love ke70 Posted February 1, 2006 Report Posted February 1, 2006 cool i may try that sometime. the crazy clarks stuff just doesnt cut the mustard by the sounds of it :y: Quote
kingmatt Posted February 1, 2006 Author Report Posted February 1, 2006 Pleased I can add to your knowledge base :y: I was thinking that the rear seal would be a throw away due to long seperations along the bottom. Wrecker thought it would work. Nice guy, saved me $. Also got a left hand mirror from him for $25 so I guess we were both happy . Matt Quote
