Outer CV boot on my SV21 camry has shat itself, Haynes manual recons it's a "non-serviceable" part but searching around the net and asking around it seems that it's apparently a fairly straightforward replacement...

Anyone have any tips?

I've never taken apart the front end of the Camry before (apart from replacing the steering rack), so have no idea what to expect. It appears that I need to take the hub off, and I'm guessing there's a circlip or something that holds it all together?

Problem is I have no money at the moment. $14 for a CV boot kit. $60 if I give the shaft to them to do (labor + parts). $150 I think it was, if I hand them the keys. I wrote it all down, but as usual it's on one of the 763,003,235 pieces of paper on my table and I have no idea where it is anymore...

Parts ordered, have arrived this morning, maybe picking it up tomorrow. Will buy a pair of circlip pliers while I'm at it and then have a look, hopefully it isn't too hard...

spend $10 dollars on fuel and bring it over i'll do it for you.

best to take the whole shaft out of the car, undo the hub nut first, 32mm socket is required, next the 2 strut bolts out, you may have to mark the top bolt washer thingy, as some camrys have camber adjustment there.

also take off the tie rod end, makes it easier to get the shaft out.

6 allen key bolts hold the inner shaft on, once those are off the shaft should come out.

now here the part i can't remenber, it could have either a circlip or a spring clip holding the c/v on to the shaft. peel the boot back and stick your finger into where the c/v balls are, there could be a clip in there, if not the c/v is held in with a spring clip. just checked should be a spring clip.

you need a big hammer, and hit the c/v and it should come off.

hope this helps, if not ring me fook, 0403756002 and i'll talk you though it.

How do you get the spring clip back on? How do you clean the CV before putting the new grease on? Kero? Hmm... Sounds quite fook-doable, but hmm...

Ooooh, tempted to make the drive... Will you be home tomorrow? I'll call you later...

Thanks!

Got all excited and set up to do it. Took wheel off, got split pin off center nut, and then dead end. Center net won't come off. Tried the breaker bar, no go. WD40, no go. Heated it up, no go. Spoke to Chris, he suggested an extension on the breaker bar, so gave that a go. One bent Sidchrome breaker bar later, nut is still stuck on. More WD40, more waiting around, more WD40.

Went and bought an rattle gun (I've always wanted one), no go. More WD40, out came the bent breaker bar again, still no go. Put split pin back in, wheel back on, sending it to the workshop probably on Monday or Tuesday to get someone else to do it.

I fail :P

Woo hoo, all fixed, for a total price of $80 + $14 for parts :D

Many thanks to Chris for all his assistance. Unfortunately I'm far too hopeless to do it myself this time :(

Hehe, when I picked the car up from John, I asked him "so, was it hard to take the hub nut off?"

"no, easy"

"how did you take it off?"

"I had to use my left hand, my right one was sore" (btw, he's right handed)

:o

Also, out of interest, he didn't take the outer CV off, instead he took the inner one off and slid the boot etc over the inside of the shaft... He recons this is easier than taking the spring clip off and on the outer CV join...
