Hello!

OK here's something weird that happened tonight....It was rainy and the roads were wet, a guy in front of me was turning and then braked half way through his turn (I have no idea why) but he didn't give much notice before slamming on his brakes and turning then stopping mid-turn. So I'm madly down shifting and thought I was going to come to a complete stop, but then he moved, so I was in first and I put my foot down and ACCIDENTALLY spun the wheels. I was going up-hill and I got the chugga chugga thing (vibrations from the front - which incidentally I don't think is normal, but has been happening since I had the last lot of work done) well...after my spin and chugga chugga, the turbo started to flutter and then a HUGE psssshhhttt in every gear (under 3500 rpm). This happened all the way to town and all the way back (so for about 70klms). Pretty cool noise but worrying never-the-less.

I checked the instruments, oil, hoses etc., but couldn't find anything obviously wrong.

I spotted some Supra's and thought *self - they may be able to tell me if I've f*cked the turbo* so I stopped and asked them...they said it sounded cool but it could be a vacuum hose that'd come off.

So I thanked them and did a burn-out out of the car park (with the accompanying chugga chugga)....well the the fluttering and the pssshhhttt-ing stopped immediately.

What's up with that?!?!?!

OK, Update...

I popped into Toyota to book the car in and told them what had happened.

He looked at me like I was crazy and asked if it was still doing it. I said no. He said did I think I could make it do it again? So for three days I PURPOSELY tried to make it do the chugga chugga thing....and couldn't!

Hubby borrowed the car and I got into it the next day and drove it...it's doing the fluttering and the psssshhhhtttt-ing. But I'm noticing a HUGE vacuumy air intake noise. So I again tried to make the wheel-spin chugga chugga and couldn't! So I'm stuck with the fluttering and pssshhhttting. *still sounds cool, but worrying*

The car is booked in for next Wednesday so here's my utterly stupid question.....*cringe*

If I continue to drive the car fluttering and pssshhhtting what damage could I do? or is it ok for me to drive it for another week (this equates to about 550klms).

has your airbox detached itself somehow, or the air filter busted itself open? that's the only reason i could think that you're getting a louder induction noise now. try looking in and around the airbox.

the only thing that will damage the car is the boost spiking. since the 7A-FE isn't designed for a turbo you could potentially do a lot of damage. if it's spooling quite a lot more than usual i'd not drive it hard. make sure all the vacuum hoses are connected/working otherwise just drive it slowly until you get someone to look at it

This is sorta correct, but they did do a bit of work and chucked on a few upgrades to make sure it could handle it....wasnt quite a "oh, we'll just turbo the f$#ker" kinda thing

Lesley, in regard to the noise, is it happening just in lower revs (3500 like ya said), or when ya come off boost? When i had it i booted it one night and when i shifted each time i heard a crisp "pssschh" and i thought id stuffed something. Turns out it was actually the blow off valve, and for some reason it hadnt been venting until that time! Might be that, but if its happening down low then good chance its not also! hopefully toyota fix it up!

ya wacked the pod filter on it yet, or is it still sitting with the spare tyre? if you like the "psccchhh" noise, wack that on and you'll be able to listen to the turbo chatter alllllllllll the time! Awesome sound, and you'll get a better response out of it cause it takes out about 1.5m of piping! :) :jamie: :jamie:

ahh well, it was actually a little more severe that I thought. The piping had come off the turbo completely and it was sucking in unfiltered air.

They consulted four *four* "turbo specialists" and because of a previous set up (piping blocked off, and some other things) i they took it back to factory standard. Now I only get a really quiet "psshht" at 5000 rpms.

I don't like it though.... it's going back in in a couple of weeks for a re-tune and I'm taking it to fours and more for some engine *tweaking*

Ah, not what you want it to be doing! :jamie: The "factory" setup sounds alright (a little stealthy), but loved the pod! went for a few months on, then off for a bit. Good that they've got it sorted out though, and hopefully 4's n more can give ya a little more go with the tweaking! :)
