  1. Thanks Crowie,

The plan is to remove both the front guards (need to do this to install my new fender mirrors anyway), and give them the once over - fill badge holes, give them a good sanding, some primer and paint. Might even shave my indicators and replace them with something smaller, but I want to stay true to the heritage of the car.

The car could really benefit from a full respray, but as a low budget project, I can't really justify the cost. A good cut, buff and wax, and spot spray and blend of the rear guards, centre garnish area below the bootlid, and ex-rust spots on the doors should do the trick for the moment. If I spend any decent money on the car in the future, I'll be looking at a 4AGE conversion anyway so then I'd want to strip the entire car back to a bare shell.

Got my hands on some white rubber dye (synthetic) from the states - planning to whitewall the tyres on the new rims for that old school look. Done properly, wide whitewalls on KE's can look pimp. Plus my mate has the same rims, so I have to do something different so I'm not completely cramping his style

  2. Picked these up today...

13x7 mk2 spitfires a mate used on a KE70 drift car. Tyres are rooted, however I knew this, considering their past life. Should sit nice and flush with a few inches drop and some guard rollage

  3. This car...rings bells in the back of my head... :blinks: I can't rememeber if I saw it at a show or in a magazine but I do rememeber liking it :y:

Probably the widest publicity it had was build threads on mr2.org.au, boostcrusing and toymods, haha. Never had the opportunity for a magazine shoot, and arguably it wasnt ever at the aesthetic standard for it. Entered a few local shows in Hobart (Shannons auto expo, big boys toys expo, etc), but not much. Was a heap of fun.

  4. haha mine over heats unless iahve the heater craken.,.,...... flushed it but still does it....

new bigger rad i think may be needed.... but gets me though

selling the soarer..... done do it ... jz is power !!

Gotta be done man. JZ is power indeed, which is why I'm passing it on to someone who will actually use it.

A GZE or SR20 might be on the cards soon - just to leave on a stand for a few months and play with, then I'll decide whether to put it in the '55 or get a dirty KSev shell \

Spotted: Lloyd Smith in his 1UZ-powered KE70 absolutely DOMINATING round 2 of the DriftGP at Baskerville yesterday - man that kid can drive

  5. Hey mate, yeah i should be at the drifts, havent missed one for a long time ;) and a few mates are driving so i reakon i'll head up

My mate has otomoto sleeve kit on his ae71, he got a boilermaker to weld them on

Any idea how much he charged to do it? A mere $300 investment for coilovers seems bonkers!

Loved the action at the drifts today - plenty of KE love out there putting the nissan boys to shame

  6. Haha, funny you say that man, I was cruising out to the drifts today with a mate of mine who drives a '73 'rona with a big boso pipe several metres straight up - looked like a train puffing steam  I'm gathering ideas re. a boso pipe, but would need to be something I could easily bolt on and off like his, to only use for events such as the drifts. Keeping this in mind, I don't want to cramp his style too much, so rather than a straight pipe I'm going to get creative - watch this space!

Just bought some 13x7 mk2 spitfires (deep dish jellybeans), picked up an old Falcon tranny cooler from a wreckers which will clean up nicely, and purchased a rubber mallet and heatgun for the inevitable guard rollage which will need to occur, and some dixie air horns are definately on the cards :lolcry: Also a member here PMed me re. selling me a round headlight conversion kit with early grille - will suit the boso styling down to a tee.

Shamefully installed a generic 5" tacho last night, and some fender mirrors. Rolled into the drifts today with the tacho in full view (mounted to a-pillar), and choke fully out with my straight through-zorst (lumpy as!) - someone asked if i was running a 13B, hahaha. The said exhaust also set off 4 car alarms within one multi-story - let the nuisance begin!

  7. Thanks for the input fellas. Found a set of old kings which I am told will suit, $50, so seems like its the go right now, even as a temporary measure.

Those coilovers seem a viable option, and a good price too. I am unsure from the pictures as to how these would weld on - has anybody had experience with these?

Also are you heading to the drifts tomorrow Jono?

Just after purchase. The only addition on my part being the "JDM as F@ck sticker" for shits and giggles.

  9. Hey guys,

I thought Id start a build thread of my KE55. Was bought as a rusty old snotbox, but with a good interior, strong 4K, and moderately low kms for its age (159,000). Picked it up for a very nice price with 6 months registration. Originally the car was purchased as a daily, whilst My Soarer is reserved as a weekender. However, the rolla bug bit, and I have started to spend some decent coin on the beast.

The project started with the intention of keeping it as a daily with some gimmicky traditional and JDM mods (220mm dildo shift knob, OMP deep dish wheel, 14" jellybeans). I left it at this for a while, with some decent 6x9s in spacers, and 4" splits in the front.

A little later on however, having viewed some HPi DVDs, etc, a particular style of modification, featured at Daikoku futo (popular Japanese cruise meet spot) caught my eye - "Bosozoku" style, or more correctly "Kaido Racer", with styling derived from 70's jap racers / bosozoku motorbike gang styling (young jap punks with yakuza ambitions).

Since, I have added some authentic JDM plates (display use), optima yellowtop battery, apline IVA-D100E, have cut out rear guard rust / rust converted smaller bits / welded in sheet metal in the larger holes, and (forgive me) filled the remaining holes. The rolla just went in for a 2" straight through exhaust last night, and whilst it is loud, it sounds good, with minor drone, and anything is better than the rusted out muffler and collapsed resonator it had when I bought it

As of this weekend, my rolla will soon be low'n'slow (3 1/2" blocks, RA60 front strut conversion w/super lows), and wearing some new shoes - 13x7 spitfires.

I figure this style of modification is a love or hate thing, but in an uncanny way, I find boso cars very cool (within reason, when modified somewhat tastefully). Fact of the matter is, its intended as daily, low'n'slow is the name of the game, and so far I like what I've achieved.

Any advice from more experienced rolla owners would be greatly apprecaited. I can imagine there will be some who will criticise me, but considering the junkheap I've started with, anything is an improvement

    Cheers guys, pics to come!

  10. Hey guys,

Currently in the process of building my KE55 'bosozoku' project. Low'n'slow + 70's Kaido racer styling is the name of the game here, with fender mirrors, whitewalls on jellybeans, massive upswept 'victory' tailpipe, grille-mounted oil cooler, etc. Not to everybody's taste I'm sure, but it's different, and it's looking cool so far

Car is intended as a daily, so I won't be going fast - performance is not an issue. Have some 3" blocks to go in the rear, and want to lower the front to match. Prefer not to chop the stock coils, but I have so far only found King lows to go in the front, which won't give me enough drop.

To the best of my knowledge, KE55 and KE70 units are interchangeable, bar the top hats, so I need to know what people have done to their 55's/70's to get them low.

I have a very tight budget, as I have a weekender Soarer where most of my money goes, so I'd rather have opinions re. springs, not whole conversions (i.e. AE86 fronts)

    Cheers in advance

  11. AW11 MR2. Aus delivered, 128,000kms, Momo 'ferrari' wheels, momo 'race' steering wheel, momo shifter, momo pedals, etc. Was my true boy racer, purchased when I was 15 before I even had my Ls. I put in some hard yards at Maccas to be able to afford that thing :). Saw a good life during my ownership, kept the 4AGE stock aside from a sealed pod intake.

Sold it to an older bloke when I was 17 and within 2 weeks he'd written it off. Never been more heartbroken.

The A-dub really got me hooked on Toyotas. Since, I imported an SW20 MR2 GT, modded the hell out of it to the tune of about $20K, 'MISTA2' plates (show car build with 200rwkw on stock turbo / steelie conversion). Currently have a '91 GT-TL Soarer with around the same power and minimal mods, hehe. Recently picked up a late-rev KE55 sedan with a rusted out boot floor, mismatched panels, jellybeans with enough gutter rash to show up most housewives in x-trails, and holes in the exhaust from a previous owner's keybangers. I love the thing!

  12. Hey guys,

After an early grille from a KE30, and hopefully a headlight setup (brackets etc). If just the grille, does anybody know what dimensions the stock circle lights are? (I have seen some circle aftermarket lights on EBay I might use - 90mm ones for memory, if they'll fit)

  13. Wouldn't have been able to enjoy much progress today either bro, weather is bonkers here atm. Good for slideage though

Saw a clean ke10 for sale a few months ago. They're great cars man hold on to her. Might see me sliding around Hobart sometime, my daily is a ke55 on jellybeans, with the passenger guard in primer and a "JDM as f*ck" sticker, can't miss it. Can't wait to see this on the road!

  14. aha hahaha

man i got told someone was talking about me on here and i had no idea who it was...

I'm good man. real good. yeah still got the ke...... very over the power though.

how are you ? you up launie or hobart now ?

Still in Hobart man. Final year of my law degree so spending less money and time on cars, hence I am now selling the Soarer. Its clean as now, so plans were to use it as a weekender but I'm just gonna sell it. KE55 goes well and doesnt overheat (as long as I crank the heater, lol). Going to do a full flush, check impeller on pump and check thermo soon though. And painting the quarter panel this w/e so that the car is all one colour!

SPOTTED: overrated KE20 coupe in West Hobart on Friday - anybody on here?

  15. Ke30 door mirrors are a little longer in the stalk compared to the ke55 one's. The ke55 shorter stalk ones were also used on datsun 200b's.

But do you need interior or exterior?????

Should have clarified, I need an interior rear view mirror. My exterior ones were sagging and one was cracked, so I smashed them off and have replaced them with fully sick JDM fender mirrrors

Do you have an interior mirror?

  16. Spotted: Yellow KE55 sedan. 6 hours later I bought it

Was after one for ages to relieve my JZZ30 Soarer of daily duties. Are most of you fellas based up North? Also how have you been Nichy? (It's Larcombe here!) Still kickin it with the KSev I see? Looks the goods man

  17. Hey Tassie crew!

Just bought a KE55 today for a modest sum of $800 with 4 months rego - 4 door sedan in classic KE30 through 55 snot yellow colour (hence my username), some fully sick signature rear guard rust (common problem?), some jellybean rims, 162,000kms on the clock (questionable), a overrated interior and solid 4 speed with plenty of meat left on the clutch - my perfect recipe for a daily driver. Also currently has LHF guard sits in primer at present also - gives it some JDM flavour, haha. Car runs a bit hot at times (gauge reading between half and slightly above 3/4 unless heater is cranked). Old owner thought it was dodgy thermostat but problem existed before thermo was replaced, so I figure the radiator is plugged full of cr@p. Plan to give it a chemical flush, reverse flush via. thermo housing, and remove the core and flush it upside down. Water pump seems fine, but havent been able to inspect core closely (picked up tonight). I thought head gasket before purchase but car runs too well to even hint at that.

Was bought as a daily, but now I just want to mod. Plans at present are to lower it, fix the rear fender rust (and possibly consider some bolt on flares if problem can't be fixed), tint the windows, VHT vinyl dye carpets / door trims matte black, and seats tan, source some KE30 tails, and install the fender mirrors I just bought for it. I was considering a KE30 front end conversion but the late model square headlights have grown on me. A bosozoku style exhaust is also on the cards, but don't want to attract too much attention from the po-po (My JZZ30 Soarer does that enough, hence the need for a daily).

Look forward to learning about these cars and tidying it up / modding it JDM retro style. Will chuck some pics up tomorrow when its daylight
