  1. My opinion would be to do the 5k of its tits, even though with a conversion you will get more standalone power. The only issue I have with a transplant is the fact that most other parts will and may need to be changed as well.Such parts like custom diff, brakes, mounts etc.If you are able to produce such components yourself than the transplant would be worth it.

I would look at the 3t. If you were going to go much more than a stock 5k you would end up replacing the diff anyway, and I would upgrade brakes as a matter of course anyway. Then you have the option of playing with the 3t to get more later.

  2. The 15% relates to the "maximum capacity engine for that car". In other words 15% on top of a 4K. 1300cc + 15% (195cc) = 1495cc

So i guess a 5K would just scrape in.

The trouble with that is that a 4K wasn't available as an optional motor for those cars. So at best, a 3K with 1166cc is the base, and a 4K scrapes in. (1166 + 175 = 1340cc)

Also, I beleive that the RTA goes down to the cc, not on the "thats near enough" principle. So that even if the engine is close to right, but still too big, it still won't pass.

  3. Sleepy, I'm guessing from your other posts you're in NSW. More than likely any info Kangaroosa has, or that I have, probably wont be of any use.

This is from the RTA guidlines:

Don't listen to the hearsay shit either. If you are serious, this is the best place to start:

This is exactly right. If you ring up the RTA, they will tell you the listed weight for the model you are looking at. When I was looking at KE26's, the figure that I was told was less than any of the internet quotes people were saying, so the RTA would be the place to start.

  4. G,day new to the rollaclub,

Just a enquiry i recently came to the problem of wheel choices for my ke20 and having the older 110 pcd less wheels available.

The 114 theres heaps of variety so the equiry is as i use an newer say ke55 for the front wheels just change the front discs.

The issue with the rear drums? Do i get like a back axle off a 30 or 55 70 model and use that? woulod that work or be wider or is there simply an easy walkthrough or something?

    cheers Paul

From what I understand, you need the axles and drums from a ke30 and you need to shorten the splines by about 5mm to get the length right.

    Cheers, Ian

  5. If you have space I'd go with an underdash unit.

Plenty of wreckers have the front end gear, like the compressor, condensor and the hose gear, brackets etc.

If you hunt around you should be able to find a cool looking retro underdash unit with chrome knobs etc.

I thought some KE30 / KE55's had the proper setup in the heater box as you would expect from a factory fitment. I have seen this at Pick and Payless one of the times that I was there. It may be a bit more hunting, but it would look a lot more integrated.

  6. Hey, I am interested in buying a KE30 4 door.

I was wondering what engine i can put in it, and if i can do it legally.

If you could give me some prices as well for how much it would cost to get engineered, and insurance if it's possible. (doubt it)

What years did KE30 4 doors come out in? like 1976 to 1978?

Oh, and whats the difference between the KE30 SE And KE30 CS?

I live in Adelaide, South Australia.

    Thanks.

I think SA is the same as most places, in NSW anymay, you can put 2.5x weight in kg = cc for turbo/supercharged, or 3 x for NA. For a ke30 that is about 800kg, it means 2lt turbo or 2.4 NA.

Also, have you thought about a ke55, basicaly the same car. The 30/55 ran from 1974 through to about 81.

  7. hehe, ive since found 6 jellybean mags... 2 of em are super fat, theyve got like 220s on em!! tyres arent allowed to stick out past the guard are they??

i think they look stupid when they do anyway but i work with what ive got!

what would 6 jelly bean mags be worth? the 2 super fat ones have 5 "beans" and the other 4 have 6 "beans" and 1 of them is a size between the two fat ones and the other three? I'm guessing i have 3 6 inch rims, 1 7 inch rim and 2 8 inch rims?? any expressions of interest in em??

and i swapped the pulsar with the 15's for a GA galant... so that sorta explains why ive lost interest in the rolla for the time being when i can put a 2.6 in the galant for $100 :sob:

(and the jellybeans came with the galant but theyre 4x100 so they only fit the rolla (galants 4x114.3))

whats a good profile to run on 14's thats not too exspensive?? i have a set of 14" scorpion alloys lying around just waiting for rubber..

    cheers,

    rob

Ke20's run 4x110 not 4x100. Only the later FWD rollas ran 4x100.

    Cheers, Ian

  8. Ahh ok thanks for clearing that up. With my ke70 I had a SR20 engine and gearbox, aswell a hilux diff fitted. Took the car to get inspected, got my mod plate then roady then staight to transport depo to get it registered. All they did was come out and check the engine/vin numbers then got a copy of the mod plate papers and that was it.

This is probably a bit off-topic, but what engines are legal to drop into a KE10 in Qld atm? I'm looking at getting one and swapping all my gear into it but it's looking like that isn't going to work for me now..

    CA18DET?

When I rang up, the RTA told me 720kg for a 2 door KE20 and 730kg for a 4 door, so 710 for a KE10 sounds about right. That works out to 2130cc NA, or 1775cc Turbo. I make the CA18DET to be 1809cc, so your car needs to be considered to weigh 723kg for it to be legal.

    Cheers, Ian

  9. Yep, that's what I've heard from a few people too. Not notifying the insurance company about the modification you did, whether it's legal or not, they just won't pay out for that modification.

Buy wheels, put them on, but don't tell insurance company and when it comes time to make a claim, they'll pay out what you told them you had.

Edit: Let is know how it goes. I know I'm not from the same state, but insurance companies wouldn't be much different if at all.

I think you would be taking a risk,, that at the discretion of the insurance company that rather than not paying you for the wheels that you didn't tell them about, that if they worked out that it was over track and therefore not roadworthy that they would knock back the whole claim and not just $1000 worth of wheels.

  10. other than after market seats, does any one know or has installed themselves seats from a later model corolla?or simular.i have a ke30.i would go to the wreckers, but i would like to know if you have done this to your own car.or could recommend later model seats that fit without to much modifitcation?

    thanks for any help andy

My ke20 had ke30 seats, and I know that SW20 seats fit into ke20's with minor modifications (slot front holes slightly, remove rear brackets and drill 2 holes)

    Cheers, Ian

  11. The crossmembers are different enough that neather of those options will work.

Try to find a TE2X cross member. That's the direction I've taken. Mines on it's way from Japan as we speak. Don't forget that you will have to either mod your pedal box for hydraulics, or get a 2X pedal box as well. (I've got one on the container next to the x-member. :lolcry:)

When it arrives, can you post some pics up? I would like to see what the genuine version of a xe2x hydrualic set up looks like.

    Cheers, Ian

  12. Hey all,

I am considering putting a Mitsubishi Saturn or Astron motor into my KE20, because

I may be able to get one dirt cheap.

(and know that parts are plentiful, along with a nice power output)

I have had a search, and was not surprised that there were no matches.

Could anyone who has had experience with these engines PM me ?

I am trying to find out a few things about the conversion, so it would be great to chat

to someone who has had experience with these motors.

I understand that engineering will most likely be necessary (if i am to keep it all legal).

    Thanks,

    Dougal

That would be close relative of the 4g93 wouldn't it? See that in one of the other engine conversion threads.

    Cheers, Ian

  13. Thats an awesome idea for a powerplant! I always wondered what box they used for the RWD conversions with these.

Regarding the capacity thing, in NSW the rules change when you hit 1100kg to 4.82 x for NA and 4.0 x for turbo / supercharged.

Just a quick question about the discs that you are going to run, what model Passat are they off? I can see that the DBA446 is the same OD, but a bit thinner, and the DBA800 is a bit closer on thickness.

    Cheers Ian

  14. Hey Guys and Gals,

I've been into cars and things for ages and have been doing up my Datto 1600, but before i got it i had been obsessed with Yota Sprinters, and moreso 4age motors.

So ive wanted a ke70 for ages, but their all 'sold out' now, and i like to have something a little different, and now have developed a love for KE20's. Only problem is, i have next to no knowledge about them, and before i go and source one i need to know what sort of things i need to look for, and what sort of aftermarket parts are available.

So, i plan on getting myself one of these neat little corollas for a daily while my 1600 is off the road, but after that i will want to make the rolla into a little weapon :jamie:

    So to questions:

    1. To install a 4ag, what needs to be done? I searched it before and discovered that you can buy engine mounts? Will sump mods or any major mods be needed or will the motor just bolt in and happy days? Or will an ae71 or sprinter front end bolt in? As i know that you can use the xmember and engine mounts from them in ke70s...

    2. Suspension and brakes: What bolt on brake upgrades are there? I will want to lower the car and make it handle like a go-kart, and wont be able to fabricate my own parts... are there places available that sell coilover kits and brake upgrades? AJPS?

    3. Will s-series or t-series diffs bolt in? don't want to be blowing diffs...

Basically i know a bit about doing the conversions in ke70s, i just need to know if the same parts will bolt into the earlier cars...

    Cheers guys

I'm no expert either, but heres the bits I know.

1.To my knowledge, no one in Australia is selling the engine mounts, other than custom ones. The only ones that I have seen are on Trademe for about $150. AE71 and AE86 crossmembers don't bolt in. Sump doesn't need mods.

2.Biggest bolt on brake upgrade is ke70 front brakes. About 212x12mm solid disk. Anything bigger will be expensive (Hopper) or custom.

3.There is no bolt in diff upgrade for a KE20. Anything worthwhile will need to be shortened and have mounts swapped over.

Having said all of this, google will really help as will the search key.

    Cheers, Ian

  15. I thought you would of taken the pistons out of it before you try and sand blast it? Or I just thought maybe just a good strong cleaning agent.

Though I'm sure other will answer your questions more educated then me hehe.

When they were doing the GTR brake upgrade on the R33 4door in Zoom a while back, they used an industrial degreaser and scrubbing brush (maybe a wire brush) before they painted them.

  16. Another Ke26 owner, yeehaa. I saw start doing it up. They are pretty rare (in sydney anyway). I have only ever seen 3 in the flesh and 2 of those I have. I am malways interested if there are any coming up for sale even if it is in sunny Brissy.

I am starting my project on mine this year once i get my new garage bult. I am going for Sr20det auto and hilux.

Post some pic's always love to see other Ke26's

How are you going to register an SR20?

  17. hey all, just starting to do some research into doing up my wagon, its a four door ke26. having trouble finding pictures and info on the dam thing!

    HELP!!

Uncommon more than rare. If it was a 2 door on the other hand........

There aren't that many left, hopefully I will own one soon.

    Cheers, Ian

  18. I have started to convert to magna discs on KE30 hubs for a KE2X. I have mounted the discs, just have to machine the front part of the hub and make a couple of rings for the centre of the disc and for the wheel mounting spigot. For calipers I am going to try and use VR or VS Commodore calipers.

This will give me a 266 x 24mm disc and fairly big calipers, leave the standard struts in place and change the stud pattern to 4 x 114.3.

So far so good, my only concern is clearance between the back face of the wheel and the caliper.

    Cheers, Ian
