demuire Posted June 30, 2004 Report Posted June 30, 2004 Righty-o, this is the story: As you all know, I'll be changing my diff soon, and along with that I'll need to be modifying my tailshaft to accommodate the new diff. Am hoping to get it all done by the end of next week, so wheels need to start turning :) Anyway, at the moment I'm running a Celica TA22 T50 gearbox, which has the same output spline as the K40/K50 gearboxes so I'm using the stock tailshaft. When I change the diff, I'm going to be *hopefully - I need to find one first!* also changing gearboxes to the AE86 T50 gearbox which will hopefully solve my never ending gearbox woes... The AE86 T50 has a different output spline, so I will need the matching yoke (?) to fit... Question is: Can I just swap the yoke on the tailshafts? Or are they different enough that I will actually need to be modifying an AE86/AE71 tailshaft instead? Does anyone have one of these I could buy? Thanks Quote
Felix Posted June 30, 2004 Report Posted June 30, 2004 Fook i'm not sure once you get out of the corolla models. have a feeling you may be needing to modify your tailshaft. a shortened tailshaft from whatever your diff came out would prolly be easiest. i'd go to a decent parts place somewhere and look at their uni joint catalog. think the larger jap diffs had larger unis. not totally sure. you would need to check. the jap ke30 unis are the same size as ke10. think it wouldn't be such a bad idea to upgrade to some thing larger. demuire Posted June 30, 2004 Author Report Posted June 30, 2004 Oh... Haha. Forgot to include some bits in my previous post :) Yes, will have to shorten the tailshaft to accomodate the different diff, and I have the rear half of the Celica tailshaft so that can be cut & shut onto my existing tailshaft when I get it shortened. Also, have just spoken to Mr Kellam, the AE71/86 tailshafts use a non-serviceable uni on the gearbox end, so will need to cut & shut that too... He has the front half of one, but that would mean I need to cut both ends off my Corolla tailshaft to put it all together... Unless someone here has a complete AE71/86 one? That way I only need to cut one end... Quote
irokin Posted June 30, 2004 Report Posted June 30, 2004 I have a feeling the jap TA22 diff has the same universal as the KE Jap diffs... I know the all the KE jap diffs have the same uni... Up the front...dunno... I Think the AE86 gearbox clutch kits are costly ($190 or so when I priced them last...and thats for a stocker) Quote
demuire Posted June 30, 2004 Author Report Posted June 30, 2004 I'm using an AE92 clutch kit, but what has that got to do with the tailshaft? Am I missing something here? And yes, I do believe the TA22 is the same as the KE Corolla, but the TA22 has a different output spline to the AE86 output, so can't use that anyway... Quote
Peter Posted June 30, 2004 Report Posted June 30, 2004 you might have to bite the bullet and spend some money on getting one made if you do, you can specify what type and size uni joints you want to use. number of places around one at northgate comes to mind from when i twisted one off the truck i was driving a while ago (slightly overloaded doing things rob would wince at in his pajero) Quote
demuire Posted June 30, 2004 Author Report Posted June 30, 2004 Hmm, still recon it may be cheaper to cut & shut my current one, I know someone who can do it - it's just what parts to use (and where to get them!) :) Quote
Peter Posted June 30, 2004 Report Posted June 30, 2004 if between you and your friend you have the slip and rear yokes get to it you already know to measure from the end of the gearbox shaft to the centre of the rear yoke to establish the required length NIKE mate - just do it Quote
demuire Posted June 30, 2004 Author Report Posted June 30, 2004 Don't have slip (is this the gearbox end?) or even the gearbox yet... Have located a slip though, but no gearbox yet. If it gets too hard I'll just do it with my current gearbox for now till I find another one and then modify the tailshaft again... Quote
