Sim Posted June 23, 2007 Report Posted June 23, 2007 hey guys, recently aquired a ke20 from adelaide, and found that the horn doesn't work. I'm needing this to work for roadworthy, and since vicroads need to inspect the car themselves since its an interstate car. i pulled off the steering wheel cover and found that the wires for the horn had been cut. I'm not sure where the wires for the horn are, i pulled off the steering column plastic surrounds, but can't really see anything. tried to trace the wires from the horn itself in the engine bay, but they intertwine into the loom and i can't find it. if anyone could give me some pointers that would be great. also are there meant too be 2 spring contact things for the steering wheel buttons? since there is a button on either side, cos i only have 1 contact. i'm pretty useless when it comes to electrics, but any help would be appreciated! cheers. Sim Posted June 24, 2007 Author Report Posted June 24, 2007 so how do i do that? i told you i don't kno anythin about electrics, so abit of a walkthrough would be nice. Quote
MRMOPARMAN Posted June 24, 2007 Report Posted June 24, 2007 (edited) hi sim. your horn system is a circuit that has constant battery power to the horn, running through a fuse in the fuse box. the earth side is the wire your looking for at the steering wheel. it goes from the horn, through the loom to the steering wheel, then through the contacts and a round strip on the back of the steering wheel, to the contacts on the horn button. what happens is when you press the horn button, it earths the earth circuit out to the steering wheel, which is self grounded, and your horn blows. so check the horn fuse is ok, and get a test light and make sure theres constant power at the horn (green wire with red trace from memory) then trace the green wire with white trace (earth) through the loom, it should come out near the steering wheel somewhere. there should be seperate contacts for the 2 buttons in your steering wheel, both should be earthing out when you press them, so if you have a multi meter test for continuity between ground and the horn buttons, or if only a test light find 12v and ground through the horn button and see if the test light lights up. also obviously find the ground wire and connect that up. if you can't find or need parts etc and wanna wire up a seperate switch, run a wire from the -side or horn, into the cabin to a switch, and from the other side of the switch to earth. if there isnt a problem with the horn or the power circuit the horn should then operate. i could probably do a dodgey circuit diagram tonight if it helps.. hope this is a bit clearer than mud also :P Edited June 24, 2007 by MRMOPARMAN Quote
glenn 87 Posted June 25, 2007 Report Posted June 25, 2007 hey mate, the wires havnt been cut, they are there. The horn was working when i droped it off at the transport depot so it must have just come undone again because we did it in a hurry. The wire is definatly there though. Quote
Sim Posted June 26, 2007 Author Report Posted June 26, 2007 all good guys, i sorted it out. thanks for the help! now i just need to find another spring contact for the other side as atm its only working on the right hand side. Quote
dfunkt Posted June 27, 2007 Report Posted June 27, 2007 Sim, the horn in my KE20 is set up the same way, only the right hand side has a spring behind it. it shouldn't matter going thru vicroads so long as that one side works  i got mine checked for roadworthy about a month ago, and it passed dfunkt Quote
