I have an after market oil cooler for my thm700 auto and its up against the radiator and gets air drawn through it when the thermo is on but it gets nothing when I'm still or my water temp is under 100c.

 

So can i put a small fan on my oil cooler and just run it to a switch in the cabin ?

 

And what will happen when i have both thermo's going, Will the different air flow rates mess with each other ?

whenever the car is moving, you certainly have air flowing through that cooler, because thats what it is designed for, whether there is a radiator in front of it or not. When the car is at a standstill, if the temp gets hot enough, the fan should cut in anyways. By having a tranny oil cooler your really doing the tranny a favour either way, so I wouldnt worry about a fan for it!

So does your thermo fan come on at 100oC!! :lolcry: Thats a bit high, should be more like 80-90oC, ie befor the water starts to boil!! If you've got a thermo switch fitted, turn it down a bit. If not, get one.

 

Yes you could put a small thermo on the oil cooler. Rather than having it on a switch in the cabin, you could have this thermostatically controlled too! Then you don't have to remember to flick it!

 

Next question......

So I'm assuming the normal rad thermo fan is on the back of the rad, and you want to put the small one on the front?

 

If so, make sure your using a push fan on the front and a pull fan on the back. Each will flow air the other way with the wires reversed, but there will be a noticable difference in flow if its set up the specified direction.

 

If you say have a small fan on the front (for the oil cooler)and a big one on the back for the rad, then the rad fan will most likely be more efficient. All that is going to happen with the different flow rates is the big rad fan will take the load off the small oil cooler fan, altimately making it more efficient!! :P

3.8's are a very hot engine, When cruising my temp sits between 90-95 and the thermo kicks in at 102 exactly i think.

 

The reason i ask is my mates auto died from oil temps getting too high and he had an external cooler similar to mine, Well its still usable it just doesn't change down gears and OD is gone.

thats preety common with turbo 700 boxes, having said that, they are normally pretty bulletproof. Are you towing with it? that can cause premature failure quite easily. The Ecotec engines ran real hot to keep emissions down. They also run a special coolant because of this
