Hi, I own a AE82 4AC powered Rolla that has just had a big problem, seized the distributor, shattered the cam gear and broke the timing belt all in one go.

Now i've been doing the repairs and now i'm up to the timing belt and need to tune it properly, a local mech said if you just turn the crank so that cylinder one is at top dead center then set the cam so that cylinder one has the exhaust valve open that'd be spot on, one problem is i can't tell which lobe (from left to right) is the intake and which is the exhaust, can anyone help?

Make sure cylinder 4 is on overlap as cylinder one is at tdc on the compression stroke.

thanks, i thought that but it looks really weird to me so got kinda confused.

but what do you mean make sure cylinder 4 is on overlap? i'm not sure what you mean. does that mean that it's exhaust valve is about to open?

Yes, if your talking about the cam belt end of the motor.

Firing order is 1 - 3 - 4 - 2

A worthwhile thing to do would to go into your local auto store and grab a service/repair manual for the car. Like a Haynes and/or a Gregory's manual

Are you sure normally exhaust ports are at the ends and the inlets are siamesed in two pairs.

Just asking
