Umm, yes I know what CVT is, and this is a little different to CVT. CVT gives you effectively infinite gears, this is like a normal gearbox, except with an (apparently) instantaneous shifting time.

 

In the Canadian Driver article, it also mentions this

 

As a CVT transmission has no shift points, Mini had to insert artificial gear ratios to make it seem like a real manumatic transmission.

looks much like permo-drive when they started out

 

permo-drive are the guys in ballina who were developing that system which stores braking energy and transforms it into motivational energy, the intended application was in trucks, to increase fuel efficiency. they've since been taken over by the us government, who sacked all the aussies and are going to use the technology in their tanks
