Rich_Rolla Posted July 2, 2009 Report Posted July 2, 2009 Often at night my car power starts to die and my volt lights come one. The headlights dim and slowly the electrics die until the car is undrivable. Dad turned the stereo off and drove it home without a worry. During the day I have the stereo set as loud as i want etc. and this doesn't happen, it's when I have the lights on. Do you think the amp could be draining power and overworking the alternator or something? It's dads theory. Btw, i'd much rather just turn the amp off at night rather than the headlights lol. Quote

G`day mate, its not impossible that your amp is helping to drain your battery. I`m assuming that you are driving a Corolla and if it is an early one it will only have an alternator that provides about 45amps in pristine condition. The manufacturer made these things to "just " do the job and no more, so maybe a bigger alternator is in order, or a trip to the local auto leccy to see if yours can be given a bit more oomph. Its worth checking that your fan belt is tight also and while your in there clean your battery terminals. Anyway, I hope that is a help. Quote
toyota_ae71 Posted July 2, 2009 Report Posted July 2, 2009 take it your sound system is too big for your battery, my cousin had the same problem in his ba falcon except his lights would dim to the beat HAHA, so he went and bought an amplifier capacitor which is kind of like a second battery. They are measured in "farad" 1 being the smallest and like 10 for industrial use. My cousin used a 2 farad capacitor and that stopped the lights from dimming. Maybe worth a try?? just a heads up though they aren't too cheap. Cheers Just to get an idea: 2 farad capacitor Quote

4ages Posted July 4, 2009 Report Posted July 4, 2009 Have had it looked at to see if the alternator is charging at all, a local auto elec will do.. Quote
