Oh-KE Posted October 12, 2009 Report Posted October 12, 2009 I have queries which I thought I would share with you all because someone might know the answers. Or at least be able to share some advice. So currently I have at my house a ke55 which is being stripped and parted out while attempting to take the good bits(which there are plenty) and put them onto my ke38 wagon. JiP sparked me off by asking about my ke55 Air Conditioner. Why am I not selling it? Well the ke38 has air conditioning but it doesn't work, so I was hoping to use parts from the 55 a/c to get it working. Problem is I have no idea what is wrong with the ke38 a/c, what bits need to be changed, whether it's worth changing the entire a/c or if it needs a refill.. I just don't know where to start with it. The heater also doesn't work :) so maybe it's got something to do with that? Next question is about the diff. The rear end of the 38 wags is heaps noisy. Squeaky brakes and noisy wheel bearings. So I thought why not swap entire diff and rear brakes from the 55 into the 38? Are they the same ratio? It's a straight swap right? That's all for now. Thanks in advance for any help. Cheers Chris Quote
son of stig Posted October 12, 2009 Report Posted October 12, 2009 diff should be a straight swap as long as they are the same type (eg banjo or borg warner). ratios may not be the same though, especially if one is an auto and one is a manual, but thats not a big problem. Quote
Taz_Rx Posted October 12, 2009 Report Posted October 12, 2009 A/C - first thing I would be doing is taking it to and A/C speaialist to see if its a simple case of re-gassing. If not they could probably tell you whats wrong. As for the diff, son of stig already on the money, pretty sure ratios are different between sedan/wagon as well as manual/auto. Depending if your '55 has a rear sway bar or not, I'd also be fitting that to the wagon which wouldn't have one. Quote
philbey Posted October 13, 2009 Report Posted October 13, 2009 +1 for seeing an AC joint. More than likely the compressor seals are shot and you have no gas left. Swapping over won't fix it because you'll still need to get her regassed. Heater is probably disconnected. Most likely the core corroded and started leaking so the previous owner disconnected the hoses from the engine. A new core and hoses will solve that quite easily. Quote
Oh-KE Posted October 17, 2009 Author Report Posted October 17, 2009 (edited) Thanks for the help. I have now taken the diff out of the ke55 and am getting the parts ready to put into the wagon. Is there anything I should renew while its all out? I was thinking I would put new oil in the diff and get new bushes for the leaf spring eyes. How do you put bushes in? They seem to be pretty tricky things to remove and replace. Also I am going to be putting another leaf in my reverse eye pack and was wondering which leaf I should put another one of? Would having two of the smallest leaf do much in terms of spring rate and load capacity? Or would it be better to put another one of the bigger leaves in? My main objective is having a lowered rear end without hitting the bump stops. Cheers Chris Edited October 17, 2009 by Oh-KE Quote
SLO-030 Posted October 18, 2009 Report Posted October 18, 2009 If you going to get the eyes reversed its probably better to get new ones. You know who to PM. Quote

Cheers Chris the bushes literally just pop in and out with the rear leaves. there is 2 half width bushes on each end. i found the best way to get them out was to jab in a flathead screwdriver well into each bush and lever out diagonally. if that makes sense... Oh-KE Posted October 22, 2009 Author Report Posted October 22, 2009 Cheers. It's all going well. Am now taking the 4k engine and 5 speed gearbox out of the ke55. Almost ready to come out but got stuck. I can't get the clip ring holding the gear stick out. Whats the trick here? Or am I just not trying hard enough? Stupid gregory's manual just doesn't go into enough detail for stupid me.. Quote
SLO-030 Posted October 22, 2009 Report Posted October 22, 2009 unbolt the whole shifter assembly from the gearbox. 4x M10 bolts (12mm head) Quote
JiP Posted November 9, 2009 Report Posted November 9, 2009 Are the heater pipes connected or just plugged up? If its plugged up it might be cause it leaks. You could change the heater core or just see if its the copper pipes that go through the firewall thats leaking. They are easily changeable if they are the reason it leaks. Its not too hard and is way easier than taking the whole dash out to get to the box. Feel free to check out the last pages of my Lolla thread (Link below) if that helps, as I sorted a similar problem out before I traded the car in. Quote
